i bought another stick of ram today(had 256 added 256) and my pc wouldn't start after i installed it.
got some blue screen that said try to restart again(xp), so i try to restart and i get the same thing. so i turn it off and remove the new stick and it starts fine.
only now my pc can't see my SB live card.

any ideas?  did this ram somehow toast my sound card?

weird.
what brand RAM is it?

reset the BIOS, not only with the jumper, but take the battery off for a few seconds.
boot with the working ram.
remove it; put the new one ONLY in the same slot the other one was in.

then you will be able to tell if its a dead ram stick.

as for the sound card - very weird.

But try replacing your current stick with the new stick. If it doesn't work, you have a duff stick; if it does, then maybe you need to relax the memory timings, or the DIMM slot is duff.

As for the sound card, try resetting your ECSD.

I've heard that the Intel chipsets are sensitive to generic SIMMS.  Better results are obtained by going with the quality stuff.

not to be overly careful, but they are the same type of ram correct?

try switching them out first.

some MB are real picky about how the RAM is inserted into the slot. make sure they are seated well.

process of eliminiation.

Check to see the sound card is firmly seated.  It may have come loose when you popped in the new RAM.
