Decisions( ATi Radeon 64mb or Gforce Pro/ultra)
« on: May 28, 2001, 11:05:00 PM »
Hiya all,

I been looking at Geforce2 mostly at Pro 64mb DDR but a few times I found ATI Radeon 64mb DDR all at Ebay.com.  The more I shop the more I am getting confused between the two.  I know that Gforce Ultra 64mb kicks Radeon butt in most of the tests.  I saw Radeon for 180 bucks plus shipping and Gforce 2 Pro 64mb for same price.  I like  you guys to give me your input of these 2 cards.  If you have it give me some first hand experience with these 2.

Thank You

Bash

Radeons has superb 2D graphics.. but drivers lets something to hope for.

GF2 is trusty mediocre card, while radeon goes from poor to superb depending on the game and driver version.

Wait Bash, see if GF2 pro's price falls more now that GF3's are becoming more and more available.

If you're going to wait, then you're going to wait for a long time...
Since when GF2 drops enough, its already slow... then you're waiting for GF3 to come cheap enough, which also goes too old by the time you make up your mind

here's my two cents:
Sony 19" trinitron running 1280 x whatever res 85 - vsync on, FAA off, 300 watt PS, Directx8.0a, 32 bit in AH - settings both 5500 and ultra(7.78 drivers - thx Wardog)

Just switched from a voodoo 5500 to the Leadtek geforce2 ultra 64mb card. Gained FR (from a solid 42 to around 60) but I have to say the overall image was better with the voodoo, especially on the desktop. Would like to lower screen to 1024 x768 and turn on anti aliasing on but the text is blurry at the lower resolution.
At work here I have the 32mb ATI All in Wonder Radeon with the Tv tuner. Though I can't play from work sitting on runway gives me around 32 fps. The ATI has a much better desktop (sharper/crisper icons, easier read) than does the Geforce, maybe better than the voodoo but not as high fps. In AH, the voodoo had a brighter picture. Both the ATI and Geforce are much darker. Night fighting was not a problem with the voodoo 5500 but is extremely difficult with the geforce. Same goes for the storm fronts. Wasn't an issue with 5500 but with the ultra, very hard to see icons. Don't know if AH has changed anything on their side that would account for any of these visual changes. Don't get me wrong, the geforce is a great card - just don't know if it's $285 better than my voodoo 5500 er my son's voodoo 5500 now

Well I don't have a high end GeForce2 to compare it against, but I just bought the budget version of the ATI Radeon card, the Radeon LE 32meg DDR card for $80.

Now realize that the pure Radeon 32meg DDR card will be about 10%-15% faster, and the 64 meg DDR version even a little faster (at $180 this is a hell of a buy IMO).

But on a 1.3Ghz Tbird machine, with my Radeon LE, In normal flight in the La7 (lots of polys in the cockpit) I am getting between 88-91 fps in normal forward view at normal flying altitudes (SeaLevel-15k).

And the picture quality with the ATI Radeon is quite a bit better than the GeForce 256 that I had to replace.

Just my experience so far.   Only you can decide.

I'd say the seller doesnt know what he talks, hes trying to make you buy it with white lies or you were buying an OEM/Bulk version and the seller gave retail instead.

OEM (US?)/Bulk (europe?) runs at 166mhz and has usually 6ns memory (I have bulk, 166mhz, but 5.5ns memory and theres always tweakers for making it worth the retail version)

Retail version has 5.5ns (even stories about 5ns versions) memory running at 183mhz.
