GV Sights
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:15:21 AM »
Did a search, didnt see anything that had what I was thinking of so.....

How hard would it be to open up the GV sights (read tanks) to custom sights? We can do it to AA vehicles and A/C, why not tanks? I know there are some thing's I'd like to change.... For instance, I'd like to put, if I made one, a reference for the average tree height in AH2 so I can estimate range better, and/or a panzer at a few ranges so that if he fits in, then yes, I have a rough range on him...

I know there is data out there for "tank A is this length/width in mils, mil-ratio-formula is this (which I am probably more familiar with than 99% of the people here)" but my problem is I have severe memory issues, so reference data is a necessity for me....

Just a random thought tonight...

If yes or no, enlighten me as to your perspectives why?

all for this, but i don't know if this would cause a coding problem. Go for it.

In some respects I always wondered why HT hadn't made them open the same as the planes.

Then I got thinking about what you could do if you had a custom sight for the main gun.

Imagine a series of small semitransparent blocks running down one side, starting large and getting smaller.

If you made those the same size as the GV hull, you would have in effect an improved ranging scale.

So instead of someone killing you with the 2nd or 3rd shot, they'd do it with the first.
Imagine the whines.

I could be wrong but I think there are just too many ways that users being able to "Tweak" the tank main sight would give them small but subtle advantages.

Course I could be dead wrong.

Ghost, this is the idea behind the ACOG rifle sights the military uses.  You have several horizontal lines that are arranged vertically and all you have to do is put the horizontal line across th width of your target and then that is the range of your target.  Very accurate.  If gun sights in tank were like this then you are correct the whine of first shot kills would be off the chart.  I looked at the historical gunsight of some WWII tanks and I dont know how HT could code them and I think that is why wew dont have them now.

The key word is IF. It would be VERY hard to produce a sight like the one you are describing and have it be accurate, and at the ranges between your dots, it would be just as easy/hard as the current one.

Also, this thing would be completely useless firing up hill.

Considering nemisis that I was the one who built the first B25h gunsight for the 75mm gun and had it accurately ranged out to 4k I beg to differ.  I'd have to say going by what I've seen you post that you don't have a clue. Sit down and listen and learn until you know what your talking about.

I can certainly testify to the accuracy of Ghosth's gunsight, it's what I use in the B-25H.

explain why it would be useless up hill? i understand if your tank was tilted due to YOU being on a hill that it would cause some slight problems, but that is true with current sights. Also, that roll difference could be fixed by instead of just lines, using a slight arch to about 50-60 degrees on both sides of the -y

If custom GV sights are implemented, I can't be sure of their effect. I can however, be sure that someone by the name of 49nem will be the first to complain.

If I have to make my own, then yeah I'm gona complain. I'm a crappy artist that can barely draw a strait line .

If I get a custom one and it doesn't work, then I'll just go back to the default.

And ack-ack, is that sight accurate out to 3200 yds? People CAN hit you at that range and even beyond it.

Back when I played, I was getting pretty good at hitting targets at 3.2K and well beyond while in a Tiger. It isnt hard to do if you know how to use the sights and views the right way.

Of course its not hard. Its easy enough that i beat Dr7 in a long range engagment once (of course he was too damn lazy to turn his tank to face me, so I had a side shot  :D).

It's accurate to at least d4.0.
