Just an FYI... it's not a skin...
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:39:38 AM »
A profile is not a skin... A picture of a plane in WW2 is not a skin. A painting, an artwork, the actual plane itself... These are NOT skins.

The skin is the 2D representation of an in-game plane. It's like the "skin" around a wireframe onion. Only the onion is a plane. You peel it off and pound it flat and you get a skin.

Calling pictures and references "skins" is wrong. When somebody painstakingly takes all those references and BUILDS the skin, then you can call it a skin!

The skin is the END PRODUCT, not the suggested/wished-for/requested source plane!

That is all. Carry on.

This is the reason Krusty has as many posts as he does.    :rofl

But he's correct, isn't he?

Nit-picky but correct.

After seeing at least a dozen posts in the past couple weeks saying "this skin is nice!" when looking at a WW2 pic, etc etc, it really needed to be commented on. Seeing art profiles being called "skins" seeing so many non-skin things being called "skins" I got the sense this was going to be a very nasty habit if you let it take root.

I made a post to stop it from taking root.

What is your objection to that, Del? Or did you think the other thread in the general forum really meant anything at all? Because if you think I'm like that you're just wrong.

Does it really matter what you call them? It's not like the players are bashing the real WWII Pilots and their planes by saying "skins" "out of context." Just my opinion.  :salute

Hasn’t the outermost part of an aircrafts structure always been referred to as a “skin”?
I tried to find some reputable sources to back up this claim. I hope these will suffice.

These from the RAAF website describing the de Havilland Mosquito: “Plywood ribs and skins also formed the mainplane leading edges and flaps.”
“Sheet metal skins enclosed the engines.”

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum describes an aircraft construction technique as, “Steel tubing airframe, aluminum and fabric skin.”

The USAF Museum website when describing a restoration stated, “The complex compound curvatures of the skin, meant a tough job for the sheet metal workers.”

So, the actual plane itself?… Yes, that is a skin.

My password at work had to contain exactly 8 characters… I chose Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Wrong. A skin is a 3D term.

It's also the dermus on a human body, but that's not what we're talking about either.

It's a 2D mesh that is mapped onto a 3D object. In animation/modeling terms it's a skin.

EDIT: It's also a gaming term, and has been part of the came content creation community for a while.

Wow, I really hope you don't actually care what people call the planes "outer design" (if that's appropriate.)  :P

I think what Krusty is trying to say is that, for those of us that hit these boards daily, especially those that take an interest in actual game skins, when we see the term "Skin" in the subject line of a thread here, we think someone has a skin for review and click to check it out.  If its not a skin, we don't see what we clicked to see.

Ultimately, I think he's just trying to save us all some frustration.
"Can we be incorrect at times, absolutely, but I do believe 15 years of experience does deserve a little more credence and respect than you have given from your very first post."

I think they get exactly what I'm saying stoney, are are only posting in response to attempt a troll. You are right, though, I was getting annoyed at the mis-use of the word when I'd look and there would be (in fact) no skin to see.
