I'm still on DX7a, is it safe to upgrade to DX8 yet?

I've been using it for about a month now, with Nvidia 12.40 Detonator 3 drivers, and not had any problems.

It works just fine with my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. No probs and I think I picked up a couple of FPS with it.

:(

Upgraded to DX8a, and upgraded my Hercules video driver to 7.52, now I'm getting discoed from AH on a cable modem connection, with an accompanying page fault error. Engine noise continues to play after the crash.

Guess I uninstall my 7.52 drivers and go back to 6.35, hopefully that'll do it.

Unless you need dx8a for a new game (Tribes 2 etc.) I wouldn't bother "upgrading."  At most you will gain 1 fps, but you'll lose it by RW being forced to use wav vs direct sound recording.

Well, I got myself mostly out of my pickle. I went back to my 6.35 drivers, and made sure I got rid of all the Nvidia .inf files before I re-installed them, so now at least AH runs.   :)

Funny, but I'm still getting an invalid page fault error, but now only when existing AH, instead of while I was flying.

What's this you say about RW? I'll have to use wav sound now? Holy cow, that is not cool!

I guess it's time to fdisk and format anyways, it's been 9 months. Nothing like a good rebuilding to get all the software back into shape.

Thanks for the input guys, guess that goes to show me how one man's treasure can be another's trash.   ;)

Yeah RW is causing the page fault error you're getting. Change it to wav recording and it will be gone. Been using directX 8.0a for awhile now myself and no problems.

RW is running just fine for me with SB Live! Value and DirectSound recording with DX8.0a.  I do always open Roger Wilco myself before I run AH though...I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Bloom and Banex, thanks for the tip on RW, that's solved my page fault error.

No change in quality that I noticed.  The diference is that your sound card can accelerate Direct Sound, so you may be losing some performance going to WAV.  That's why I don't recommend going to dx 8a thinking you are going to gain performance.
