New driver install???
« on: June 09, 2001, 01:09:00 PM »
I just dled and installed the latest ATI drtivers.  Following the destructions exactly. I fired the install from win2k (installed on my d drive) but the drivers unloaded and installed on the c drive (my win 98se partition). Do I need to install on the D drive also?  Because I did not do the 98se uninstall sequence have I now going to have problems?

From ATI this somehow doesn't surprise me...

Have you tried booting into Windows 98 and testing them?  If you can't get in, just press f8 during boot up and go into safe mode.  Go to device manager and remove the listing for your video card.  Reboot.  Let W98 load completely this time and it should redetect the card and then you can apply drivers again.

As for Win2k, I'd run the driver install again after that and be sure to point it to the right partition.

Are you talking about installation files or the drivers themselves? Drivers wouldn't go to C if your operationg system runs from a different HD/partition. They install into your System directory wherever that might be.

If the ATI zipped file unfolded itself into your C drive - just point the installer to the right directory when you install the drivers - makes no difference where the installation files are located.

Which version were you trying to install anyway? I try to keep with the latest and haven't had any probs yet (C=W98SE/D=junk/E=more junk/F=W2K)

p.s. if you try to uninstall them under Win98SE - it won't do a thing, you didn't install them there hence they "don't exist" form Win98 point of view.

Dual boot can be confusing but think about it as 2 diffrent machines just sharing the same box - programs installed under one won't run under another etc

Well everything is working fine.
I just clicked next as the destruction's from ATI said that I needn't remove the old drivers if installing from win2k!  However the install wizard unpacked and installed them on the c drive.  I installed again on the d drive and things went smoothly. I then rebooted to 98se and could find no problems running anything, so I have to believe that whatever windos did worked out ok  ;)

Ps This machine is quad boot ;)
I did forget to point out I dl'ed and ran the .exe from the H drive while booted in win2K which is on the d drive.  Just to make sure I dblclicked the .exe again just to make sure that it was defaulting to C, it was.  By the by the H drive has no installed os its just a partition to hold backups and I DL to it.
Thanx for the help everything appears to be functioning in a normal windos manner at this time.  :D
