What heatsink/fan are you using? I'm using a Thermaltake ChromeOrb, and it hasn't impressed me. After an hour or so of gaming, CPU temp hovers around 50 C. System temp stays around 32 C. Running a 1ghz T-bird right now in a case with the sides off and plenty of fans inside. System keeps locking up in games, and I suspect its heat related. After shutting down for 20-30minutes, I can squeeze another hour or two of gaming out of it before it locks.

I ran a 700 Athlon in the same case with no problems, so CPU seems to be it. Suggestions?

Using a Globalwin Fop38, the fan is a 7200RPM Job and is noisy as hell but it does a very good job.
This is on a Tbird 850 overclocked at 1100 cpu volts 1.85

None of the orbs are very good. They just look good.

Go to www.tomshardware.com or www.anandtech.com and find a heatsink article.

My 1 Ghz T-Bird also runs about 50 deg, but most of my lock ups are from RW! Have never had one that is heat related that I know of.

Yeah Bloom, I've never heard anything really good about them either, but I got it as part of a "deal" heh. Cavalier, what temp does your CPU usually run after an hour or 2 of gaming?

Well I run 1GHz non-overclocked T-bird with FOP32 heatsink.

It's supposed to be good (tomshardware etc) but when it had arrived I found out that the underside of the heatsink is not polished and with the stock "thermal grease" (crap btw) I had CPU temperature going up and down like crazy.

I got the Arctic Silver II compound on it (took yonks to get the stock "guano" off everything!) and the temperature "surges" stabilized a little but the chip still runs up to 50C

. And the fan is noisy as hell - reasonably high-pitched whine at 5400 rpm - rather annoying.

Need to find something better too I guess

If you have money, almost nothing beats Vapochill boxes.. Theyre compact, silent and will literally FREEZE your chip.

Downside is the price, around $800 if I recall right. (Yeah thats only the box + compressor + supplies for cooling.)

If youre a DIY kind of guy, waterblock cooling is an effective and silent solution to heat related problems.. But be prepared to a lot of tubing and sealing gaskets =)

One of those leaks can end your mobo instantly so precision is essential.

I'm planning a watercooled project for my next gaming box..

Using the Titan Majesty (prolly ChromeOrb?) and my system runs at 48'C.I have also had these black screen lock ups recently.Propable cause might be RW.Pretty annoying having a lock up in the middle of a good kill streak....Gotta build a cooling system with water or gas.

Want to see if the Orb is drawing the heat properly off the Die?
Try setting a case fan so that it blows through the fins of the Orb (2-3" away max). If that keeps it cool, then you just don't have enough air flow around the orb.
If that doesn't work, then you are not drawing the heat off the die. You may want to remount it an make sure you don't have too much paste. If you are using the "Sticky" mount tape, then you may want to try some paste.
Paste: make sure you use just enough to fill the miniture groves in the 2 surfaces. The idea is to maximize contact surface, but not add insulation. Too much paste will insulate the heatsink from the die.

Sides off: If you are running cooler without sides, then you don't have enough air flow through the case.

I had to fix mine up for the same reason. I could run fine with the sides off and a floor fan blowing into it, but who wants that?

Now, I have 2 80mm draw fans for pulling in cool air (custom dust filters too), and 2 exhaust sources (PS Fan and an old 486 fan blowing out) to remove the heat from the top of the case.
One of the draw fans is blowing directly accross my CPU/Heatsink.

I actually drilled my own case and modified some panels to make it work.
My theory: Draw in from the front and rear at the bottom, and push out front and rear at the top.

Put Water inside an electronic...EXPENSIVE electronic appliance?
Cheaper, safer and easier to buy a room AC and duct the 50° air to the case.

All that stuff is SO extreme!

Hey I'm an extreme kind of guy..

That vapochill box is meant for those people who really want to push the limits of hardware. I just wanted to give examples from the other end of the envelope compared to GORB's (which is what I use atm. too

)

My celery 667 runs @901 now with cpu temp around 38C with only a GORB and closed box, no extra ventilation whatsoever. I've never had to worry about heat even when overclocking.. (Doh, I live in finland its cold here hehe..)

Ambient room temperature is 26C. I could put a hose outside the window and suck -10C to the computer but that would be hazardous.. For both my feet and condensating water.

Watercooling is not so risky as many think, properly done it won't leak a drop of water anywhere. The condensing water is the biggest problem when going close or below freezing point (make sure to use anti-freezer like glykole with water..)

Of course if you screw up, you will kill the box. However you can do exactly the same by chipping the AMD by installing a tight heatsink/fan combo... Life is a squeak.

Dragging this thread back down to what most of us can afford to cool thier CPU with (But yes the Vapochill looks outstanding)....

Coolermaster Heatpipe Radiator fan unit used here after about 3 hours of AH CPU temp generally about 42 degrees (Athlon 1GHZ).

The 2 on the top seem to fair quite will in some of the tests I have seen. I would recomend the Turbo model as it moves the air better. (Be Aware, it's not quiet)
