M3 Pictures Needed.
« on: August 21, 2010, 07:29:43 PM »
I'm going to dive into the realm of skinning and I'm thinking the Aces High stalwart of the decade needs another option for a skin other than default.  The M3/M3A1 half-track saw service in all theaters and over 22,000 of them were made.

I'd really like to find a British paint job to start with.  If I can get the ball rolling, I'll get both a North African and Normandy paint schemes whipped up.

I have some books that show pics of British and US M3's in both N. African and ETO paint schemes, but nothing detailed enough to improve on the current M3 skin.  If anyone has a link to some pics I would greatly appreciate it!!!

 :salute

Just a friendly warning, but AH's M3 is horrible for skinning. It is one of the oldest 3D shapes in the game, designed when the game used 256 res art. It suffers from large areas of stretching and mirroring. Its a few years since I looked at it but I vaguely recall the whole rear of the vehicle is stretched widthwise and unskinnable. I'd suggest you do some testing before committing yourself to it.

Thanks!  I was hoping someone would step forward and give a head up.  Does the same go for the LVT's and M8?  Neither of them have any skins available other than the default, too.  The M3 is one of the most widely used vessels in the game, 'tis a shame there are no North African, winter, or other such skins for it.

I haven't looked at the LVTs or M8, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have the same sort of issues as the M3.

Not to discourage skinning but a winter camo or desert camo would stick out like a sore thumb for GVing. That is one of the largest complaints about the panzer is the desert camo default pattern sticks out too much. Most of the maps in the MA are tropical and summer maps utilizing a lot of greens.

Love the new skins out for the M4 series, but anyone taking out the winter camo'd M4 is gonna stick out like a pink Spit  :salute

I agree.  The snow or desert camo in the "green hills of tyrol" of the MA's would stick out like a carrot in spandex.  I was hoping to find some photos or drawings of some personalized paint jobs the G.I.'s did on their M3's.  I'd simply add in some dirt or mud stains, perhaps dirty up the olive drab paint, and do my best to add in the "Kilroy Was Here" or Mae West artwork.  Although, having a darker British or US North African color scheme would not be too far fetched on some of the maps, there is enough contrast.
