processor change

Ok here is my dilema, I changed my processor from a 7440 to a 8500, both were 775 chipsets. Now when I turn on my computer it shows absolutely nothing. The computer is going thru the cycles but I am not getting anything showing onto the video screen.

I tried changing back to my old processor and still nothing. Did I possibly do something wrong??

Any help would be appreciated.

if I remember correctly you may have to reinstall windows.  that's what i had to do when i switched from p4 to e8400.  do you get nothing? not even the start up screen?

Absolutely nothing..blank screen ...like there is no signal going to the screen.

do you get beep codes when you start the computer? If you do it's trying to boot, if you don't it isn't. It sounds to me like the cpu might not be seated all the way, and you MUST use the heat transfer goop <--- technical name... to seat the heat sink. Other thing to check is if you unplugged a power cable to the motherboard to make room, did you plug it back in?

turn monitor off and computer off.  then turn monitor on, then computer on about 2 seconds after monitor is on.  also check connections to monitor, mine was not plugged in first time, check both power connections to mother board and the power to vc.   if u see the lights on on your mobo, there's there's a good change card is not hooked up to monitor right.


if you had to remove the mobo to install cup and fan, then make sure all the connection are on correctly.  the above suggestion is how i solved mine last week when installed the 465 for the first time.  but changing cpu and putting old one back and nothing happens, there's a chance one of your connection is wrong.  make sure vc is properly seated (mine was not, lol),  also switch cables to monitor to something else, vga etc.  last make sure the selection on your monitor toggle to find the one that it recognizes.


hook up your ps3, wi to your monitor make sure it works too.

He is getting NO video input to his screen.  Kind of hard to see if bios 'sees' anything if you can't even see bios!



Try reseating the video card, and the monitor connection.  If that doesn't help, put the old processor back in and see if it boots.  Some motherboards aren't compatible with newer processors, even if it is the same chipset.

OK I just checked some things out... the e7440 is a Socket 604 Xeon Processor, whereas the e8500 is a socket 775 processor.  Maybe you mean the e7400?

My first C2D computer was an E6300.  When I upgraded it to the E7400 it wouldn't work with the motherboard.  I found a 'custom' bios that allowed it to work, but it wasn't stable after that.  Only a new motherboard fixed my issue.  What motherboard do you have?

Start with a BIOS reset.  There will be a jumper or a button.  Also take the battery off the motherboard when doing this.  IF you can let it sit overnight with the battery out.  Then see if it posts.

Also make sure you have the processor seated correctly.  Take the heatsink and fan off the MB remove the processor and re-seat it.  Apply thermal paste as needed.

Aside from the other tips here, some not so obvious pointers:

Did you change _anything_ else in the system when you changed the cpu? Did you even touch anything else? If so, make sure the component is fitted in the right way and seated properly. Doesn't hurt to do this even if you think you didn't touch anything, you probably did.

Double check _all_ the cables, including monitor cables. Make sure your display card is seated securely to the bottom, they move easily and stop working. Double check your monitor is on, connected to mains power and to the computer. Double check all the power cables inside chassis your display card probably needs a separate power cable or two, too. If it's unplugged you get no video.

You'd be amazed how many people were frustrated and thought their computer stopped working just because they forgot to turn the monitor back on after assembly (as they're used to it being on automatically).

Did you use a magnetic screwdriver? Did you make sure you didn't get a spark{static electricity} from your finger. Did you use a anti static wrist band or touch the case before you touched anything in side? Were you on a carpet with socks on working on the change out? These things may sound stupid but had a friend say man did I get a shock when I touched *** in the case.  He was replacing more than the CPU after that.

Wow just changing the processor and monitor is a big change. Went from 59-60 fps to a solid 75 fps.

Ohh semp you mean when I press alt f4 I don't get the B29 liberator??
