TM WCS MKII type 1 or 2??
« on: July 05, 2001, 04:42:00 PM »
Hey folks!

Does anyone out there remember how to tell the difference between the TM WCS MarkII  "Type 1" and the "Type 2"??
The "Type 2" had a newer style chip that allows it to work with the later sticks.
I recently scored an old but never used WCS MKII but for the life of me i can't find the white paper on the net that told how to tell if it's a 1 or a 2.

                     Thanx in advance  :)

Mars ...I remembered the question.  I still have a new Mark II WCS, in the box .. with the date that says its from 1994 [and its a type II].. so I think your safe to assume that its a type II.  I went to both manuals loking for your answer and the only thing I could find was in the ....

"Technical Supplement Manual" page 17 ... and in the middle of the page their is a paragraph that says "....On a type 1 throtle, there must be excatly 6,corresponding to the six characters for throtle steps and AB steps - throtle increase, throtle decrease, AB enter, AB exit, Ab increase, Ab decrease.

For a type2 throttle, this indicates that the number of steps specified for throttle and AB does not match the number of characters encountered following the throtle and AB step values"

Clear as mud .. huh.

Hope this help

Thanx Sprint!

Heh!..It's always spooky when the 1st page of the destruction manual begins with "Problems and troubleshooting".
Several years ago on the TM webpage FAQ there was an article about how to tell the difference between them by looking at the microcode chip ident numbers but that FAQ is LONG gone. I checked the TM support forum and noticed there were three posts asking the same question I am and these were the ONLY posts with zero replies..HEH! Im taking that as a hint to score the new all metal USB digital HOTAS setup coming out in Sept.  :)   The chip on my unused WCS shows a date of 2/93 which I believe is right around the time they were switching to the type 2 microcode.
Im pretty sure the chip in the WCS ive been using got cooked after "Pancho Villa" accidentally unplugged the keyboard while it was on. :D  The throttle still works but, after that, none of the buttons will program and the lights randomly flicker and flash otherwise I'd just slap that chip into the older WCS.
I guess I could always just plug it in...see if it works and keep an eye out for wisps of smoke.
