low performance on a PIII 500
« on: October 22, 1999, 06:18:00 PM »
Hi there,

When I listen to all you guys in the arena getting 60FPS or so on a Celeron300 I really come to think that there must something severely wrong with my system:

PIII 500 - Erazor2(TNT) - 128MB RAM

When I fly at 1024 resolution using high resolution textures I get an average FPS of about 20 - and that's really not very satisfying. I ran several benchmarks and system checks but did not find any anomaly.

- 3DMARK: 4033 (slightly below average) and CPU 7400

- Sandra: mostly normal values - divergence of less than 3% average

BUT I do get the framerates in AH or Janes WW2 (which I cannot run in 1024 with all details max above FPS 10-20)...

I newly installed DirectX 7 and using the latest drivers for all components.

I think I even had the better framerates for AH with my PII 350...

Please advise

Kirin

this is ONLY a guess. but did you change vid cards when you upgraded?
Guess #2 you only said TnT (not the TnT2) so you will have a limit based on the older board style.
Guess #3 Erazer2.... sounds like one of the knock of boards that have 1/2 the normal bus speeds on board. you take for example the Creative labs (true) TnT2 with a 128 bit bus and then a Creative labs M64 (knock off) TnT2 with the 64 Bit bus and you get a card that is a lot like the real thing but less quality. I do know there is one called the Butterfly TnT out there its good for price range but be carefull of what is in the box and not just the outside of the box.
also if its AGP make sure you have the AGP apature size set at 1/2 your ram size (you'll find it in bios)
if you have more questions (I know the is AH board but....) go to the AGW board for WarBirds and go to software/hardware and ask for ndrtkr for help. he is a hell of a hardware freak!

Sir Kirin,
I bet its the video card.  I have PIII 500 with 128Mb RAM like you, but My video card is Diamond Viper770 Ultra.  With hi-res textures at 1024x768 I'm still in the 50's for FR.

Hmm... thank you for the advice - what puzzles me is that I almost got the same FPS with my PII 350. I am not sure, they could have been even better...   (

I just reinstalled my whole system for clean up purpose - but no change for AH...  well, that was my Saturday. I hope a GeForce will find its way into my system soon...

Go over to nvidia.com and get there new reference detonator drivers for the tnt2.
dump your existing drivers and get Nvidia's.
I got rid of soundblaster riva tnt drivers, used Nvidia's detenator drivers and got about 10 fps increase.  I do not use any mip mapping, or anti-aliasing under direct 3d.  by the way make sure you have hardware exceleration enabled under directx 7.
Use your explorer to check out programs, directx.
Also very importantly, hit control alt and delete.  You should have only explorer, and systry running.  If you have more than that, your computer is using up to many resources.
Try ending some TASKS.

Maybe I missed it, but did you say you were running with vsync disabled? That makes a HUGE difference in frame rates on my Viper 770. Also killing all that crap running in systray will help a lot too.

There are a number of good suggestions here, Kirin, leading with disabling Vsync and making sure the systray is clean. At work I run a PIII/450 with an STB V4400 TNT 16MB PCI TNT card, and I get frame in the 40s to upper 50s. BTW, I'm using the 0.48 reference drivers at the suggestion of BBGun, who knows a great deal about these things, from AGW HW/SW forum.

Thank you all for your help.

I was already running most of the suggestions you made. Of course I had VSync disabled and had 3d acceleration turned on. And I only keep the essentials tasks you mentioned running (well RW from time to time   ).

About the drivers: Can I really use the detonator drivers tnt2 for my tnt? I think I tried the nvidia drivers before, but got worse resulsts in 3DMARK - no noticable change in AH.

At least I am running a totally cleaned system now... hehehe... well. that's about it!

the TnT2 and TnT are the same breed but differant horses still... I would not advise using drivers from differant levels.... thats why they make differant drivers for them.

OK, I went to nVidia site and d/loaded latest and greatest reference drivers... Trying to install them and it gives "no compatible chipset found" message. I have Viper 770 Ultra which is a TNT2 Ultra thing unless Diamond lied to all of us...

Anyone knows what's happening?

We have a PIII O/C to 550 with a DM 770 ultra & 128 Ram. We use the latest drivers from DM & we're getting high 50s to low 60s. I don't think I've ever saw it below 55.
FWIW,
Good Hunting!
Ps. All settings are maxed except tach which is set on 4 & mip mapping on 6. (1024*768)
