I haven't heard from JJ but he lives on the other (north Island) so he is probably still in his pit sleeping off last night session..

I have a squaddie and a couple of mates that live there but haven't heard anything from them..

Although it was big I don't think it was too bad....Mind you I'm sitting here in Auckland reading about it only..They have lost power and a few other services have been affected also.

Only Rednecks and white supremacists live in Christchurch.

But seriously, there are reports of widespread damage to property but few serious injuries and no deaths reported yet. The friends I've rung have been fine and have all their utility services intact.

New Zealand is a bit bigger than people imagine it to be.

Yeesh if that's what you call Christchurch, I cringe at what you must think of Dunedin.   :lol

Hoping for the best for my friends down there, and for that awesome giant Chess board in the middle of Cathedral Square.

No they live in the north island also..they live in our gold mine town Waihi....

Wow after speaking with somebody down there they were saying that there wasn't much damage...but the pictures coming through..he is lucky to be in the part he is in...there have been quite few buildings downed...as has been said a few injuries  but no deaths so far.

What he said.

@ druski85 - Just kidding mate. I have a friend in Rangiora who has a sarfie partner and she is getting a bit bent out of shape at the typical kiwi black humour coming to the fore. Helps keep things in perspective I reckon. Plus Dunedin is a breeding ground for some of the better things we like to label as Kiwi so I'm hardly likely to bag the place am I?  :D

More News: There's been a fire or two kick off in the CBD. That's the big worry especially as an aftershock in the region of 6 is still expected.

9 people were killed in a Skydiving aircraft crash today over Fox Glacier: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4096455/Nine-dead-in-Fox-Glacier-plane-crash. Only one death as the result of a heart attack suffered during the quake. 90% of power back up, but still widespread issues with water and sewerage.

Uh huh.  I lived just off of Route 1, north of the major student ghetto, but still very much in range of the pubs.  The night the AB's won the Trinations in 2005 was quite possibly the longest period of time traveling (blacking out) I ever experienced.  :uhoh

Ah, that's terrible.  Coasters are few and far between anyway, so I'm sure the loss of 5 will hit very close to home.  :frown:
