Today is the Battle of Milne Bay -- please join us
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:43:51 AM »
Join us to commemorate the Battle of Milne Bay, which ended September 7, 1942.

We will be running it at 11:59 pm Eastern Time US (after today's air racing), and we ran it once today already at 9 pm Melbourne time.  It was a lot of fun!

In August, 1942, the Japanese launched an invasion of allied-held Milne Bay, first softening it up with air attacks, then invading with elite Japanese marines -- the Kaigun Rikusentai. It was part of the Japanese plan to capture New Guinea and to use it as a launching point for attacks upon and eventual invasion of Australia.

To this point in the war, the Japanese had been nearly invincible in battle, dealing many crushing defeats to their enemies. Here, fighting to hold the stepping stone to their country, fighting with troops, P-40's, and Hudson bombers against Japanese forces that included Type 95 Ha-Go tanks, the Australians were the ones to prevail.

"Some of us may forget that of all the Allies it was the Australian soldiers who first broke the spell of the invincibility of the Japanese Army; those of us who were in Burma have cause to remember." -- Field Marshal Sir William Slim

Results of the first running (9 pm Melbourne time) are unfortunately some guesswork since we had an arena reset part way through.  (The problem was that I didn't notice that taking p13 would reduce rook bases to under 3 and trigger a reset -- my fault, not the game's.  Very sorry about that.)

I got the log for everything after the reset here, in the "TDI Events" section:

http://ahevents.org/event-logs.html

allies got 17 kills and 44 obj destroyed
axis got 6 kills and 76 obj destroyed, and captured p13

I don't have results for the 1st half, but I'll assume the kill rate and obj rate were about the same.  Sorry -- I have no better way to do it as the reset flushed the first log.

That would give allies 2 * (17 + 4) = 42 points, and axis 2 * (6 + 8) + 25 = 53.  So, axis just squeaked by for a victory, but it is a very rough estimate only.

Thank you all very much for playing! <S>

We finished run #2.  The logs are here in the "TDI" section:

http://www.ahevents.org/event-logs.html

And the results are . . .

Allies:  39 kills, 118 obj destr = 51 points total
Axis:  23 kills, 130 obj destr = 36 points total

Allied victory.

Thank you very much for playing, folks! <S>

Missing 25 points for the base capture, or didn't the port count?  Just wondering.

Ah, I missed the capture.

Yep, it counts.

Allies thus have 76 points.

That was a tough battle.  I just wish I'd taken a moment to figure out a better strategy.  Plus, the deficiencies of flying A6M's, especially against seasoned P40 pilots was pretty obvious. The P40's could run away whenever they wanted and come back when they had an advantage.  Just plain ol' tough.

I'm going back to command school. :)
