How to make an Airport Cannoli
« on: September 09, 2010, 07:14:32 PM »
Just before Xmas 2003, my overnight shift was just supposedly ending at 0700.  Unfortunately
my relief didn't bother showing until 0830 and this disaster occurred about 0655!

A mechanic was washing the Bell 206 Jetranger in one of our bays and accidentally shorted out the
foam system.  The foam also shorted out the main hangar doors, so after the hangar filled up to it's 30
foot roof <very impressive on the security camera footage btw> it than ran out the open doors and
covered the ramp in 5-8 foot of foam.

     Enjoy  :D

It could have been alot worse.  This foam is soap bubble based so it didn't do much damage.
The poor guy in the helicopter for the aerial shots had his Citabria in the hangar and his Outback
in the parking lot that got foamed.

Even though the Hazmat folks and the NJ EPA said it was ok to wash it into the drains, the airport
authorities were weenies and made us collect it.  Well until it rained like mad on the 25th, so it was in
God's hands after that  :D

No one was hurt, so not a huge deal.  Just FYI, that was only one of our two foam canisters, so the pile
could have been twice that size!  The most expensive part of the cleanup were the two birds my company
had to charter to take the trips for the planes foamed on the ramp.
