Dead tanks
« on: September 10, 2010, 10:14:09 AM »
Currently when you kill a tank it blows up, the turret goes for a spin and then the whole thing disappears. I wish the burned out hulks remained on the battlefield.

Might be fun, but would be gamed to the extreme. The first possible way that comes to mind is using those hulks to hide behind and shoot through. If they acted like bushes and stopped rounds (I make myself laugh every time I think about that :rofl :rofl) entirely, then again, use them as hiding points AND as a wall to creep around with.

After a bit they'd have to vanish I suppose, but then we're right back to the reason you made this wish.

Not a bad idea, but it isn't right for this game.

How would you tell which tanks are dead and which are merely wounded- i.e. how do would you tell which tank to shoot?

I agree, lag would be very bad if this was put into the game. But, It would be cool to see a graveyard of tanks.

As a corollary to your wish, when you die you cannot re spawn until your previous, dead tank, with your dead body inside, is removed from the battle field.

After all, you're dead.

would it really be any worse than the bomb craters that stay on the field for a certain time?

i have seen some true moonscapes at times, and never noticed any lag or framerate hit..

Yes. Craters are flat, 2 dimensional pictures only. A tank is a more complex, 3 dimensional object.

Make it another of the advanced graphics settings, either on or off.

So if I have it "on", my enemy can take cover behind a wreck, when I have it "off" he can't?  ;)

Good point.  I guess just model it like the old hills, where you can still see through em. :)

spawn at 85 (not sure which map) would have hundred of burning tanks in just a few minutes.  by the end of the night there will be thousands.

You could put a time limit of some sort after which the hulk would disappear, and/or put a limit to the number of hulks in a given radius before they disappear, which would reduce the lag issues.  We now have planes that continue to exist and fall out of the sky rather than exploding into a giant fireball when a pilot is killed, so I see this as being similar.

For an attacker, seeing three hulks ahead would be a good cue that there might be a defending camper right around that hedge . . .

This

Or...

Maybe they could be included in the ground clutter in the TE?  It seems to me that including burned out tanks, trunks, planes etc would provide a little extra eye candy/immersion without killing frame rates near GV spawns or @ capped bases.
