Viper 770 Ultra / 133mhz FSB
« on: June 02, 2000, 10:13:00 AM »
Proposed:
WIN98 SE
Abit BX6-R2 Mobo
Pentium 3 600e mhz @ 800 mhz with 133 mhz FSB
PC 133 cas2 Ram
Diamond Viper 770 Ultra

I'm told that the Viper 770 ultra would be o'clocked quite a bit.... maybe too much in this situation???

Can this card run reliably at the 89Mhz that would result from jacking the buss to 133mhz?

Has anyone had experience with this one? Any recommendations? Thanks for any info.....

The Viper 770 will not even run at 72Mhz AGP bus speed.  No chance whatsover of success at 89.  You MUST run this card at 66 Mhz.

Hi Bloom25, thanks for your feedback.

It contradicts info I've gotten from the AGW Hardware and Software section recently, but it seems to confirm info I read at AnandTech's site.

Is your info anecdotal or is it from your direct personal experience?

Thanks again,

Both actually...  I tried overclocking my FSB once and was unable to even get it to boot.  I then read an article at Tom's Hardware site which confirmed my results.  You can try it, but I greatly doubt you will be able to get it to do ANYTHING at 89 Mhz.

Hi folks,
I hate to disagree, but I have had my V770 Ultra for a year now and ran it at 83mhzFSB/AGP almost the entire time. It is now running at 78mhz AGP(FSB 117) as I have a PIII 550E now instead of a Celeron 400@500.
This is on an Abit BX6R2. I have had no problems at all although I run case of with a floor fan drawing alot of air across the system. I know others who have had theirs running fine at 89mhz so it CERTAINLY is possible and even likely. Just pay attention to heat issues and you'll probably be fine./I even have the card slightly O/Cd to 160/200 core clk/mem. Just my $.02

Boy am I glad to hear that, Kbman.   Thx for the input.

Bloom25, maybe you had a problem with another peripheral? It might warrant another try. At any rate, thx again.

Well, I guess give it a try then.    When I tried it my system wouldn't even POST.  I'm guessing then that my MB chipset won't handle a 100Mhz+ bus speed.

I'd recommend you guys take a look at this article though:

I had the exact same result.

Hi Folks,
A little update. I've been doing some tweaking and got my system to be stable at 733mhz(133mhz FSB/ AGP 89mhz). Windows runs fine BUT the V770 Ultra definitely is finicky about the 89mhz AGP bus and WB, AH and various benchmark utilities lock-up. Before going to 133FSB I had it absolutely stable at 682mhz (124FSB/ 83AGP) and played AH for many hours without a problem. I now have it at 710mhz (129FSB/86AGP) and have run AH offline without issue. I will be monitoring stability and will post back if there are any problems. I have the card itself O/Cd using PowerStrip to 160/200 core clk/mem.
So, it seems you may expect some difficulties with the 89mhz AGP setting on Abit BX6r2 boards at least. Some newer boards have a 1/2 AGP divider as an option which resolves this problem so you may want to consider that if you havent made your purchases yet
Just wanted to let you know my results as I was somewhat optimistic in my last post Good Luck!!

It sounds like maybe mine didn't work because it got too hot.  I'd say give it a try gunthr, but make sure you have good cooling in place.

Unless I'm forgetting something there's a facility to go 2/3 of AGP clock on BX6 r2 - surely this would help?

You are right, Lynx. I don't have the info in front of me, but I think on the Abit BX6-R2 you have the option of either a 1/1 or 2/3 divider on the AGP. However, what's needed is a 1/2 divider, ie. 133mhz/2= approx. 66mhz

The newer boards which fully support 133mhz FSB have the 1/2 setting for the AGP which lets it run at 66mhz, as intended. At least, that is my understanding...

I'm running V770 on BX6-rv.2 on 89Mhz AGP buy i had to set AGP x1. Everything runs fine and that performance realy small.

Hi radegast,
Interesting solution, but exactly how did you disable AGP2x? I couldn't find a setting for it either in the BIOS (latest) or in Device Mngr. Also, what was your actual performance hit as a result of that setting? It seems to me that it would be significant as the AGP speed would then be 2/3 of the default 133mhz (2x66) and almost 1/2 of my current 166(2x83) setting. Thanks for the feedback

 A follow-up:

I ordered a Retail Pent III 700 mhz from Googlegear for $243, not wanting to pay the ransom that resellers are asking for the cBO Stepping version.

To my surprize, I received a 700 with cBO Stepping!

I popped it in the ABIT BX6-R2 using only the stock fan and that questionable "thermal pad" that comes with it.

I cranked it right up to 133 fsb   using 128 mb Mushkin 133mhz cas 2 rev 2,  and just that quick, 933 mhz without any fiddling around.

I havn't even applied any of my Arctic silver thermal grease yet.

The TNT ULTRA didn't miss a beat... so far  ;-)

 plug your ears...    YAAAAAAHHHHHOOOOOOOOOO!
