VOX not working
« on: September 12, 2010, 06:23:17 PM »
First off, I tried the search function. Nothing relevant since 2007.

This is my first time running the game since the last update and VOX is just not working. I cannot transmit, or receive. I tried .resetv and relogged several times, and still nothing. Any ideas?

If you tuned to yourself in the V channel and heard nothing, and heard nothing using Windows recorder, then your headset/mic may be the culprit. The wiring near the connector is usually pretty delicate in them.

If they lasted forever, they wouldn't sell as many would they?  ;)

Nope, not that, I mean NO one can be heard. I had about 12 people today jump on VOX either on a channel, on range, or tuned to me, and I heard nothing at all. Game sounds work fine though.

Check your sound device configuration in Options->Preferences->Game Sounds

If you are not hearing anyone on VOX, it usually means the port being used for VOX transmissions is either being blocked, or our behind a router that does not support UDP over NAT.

What should I look for under Game Sounds? I've tried all three settings, the Primary Sound Device, the Speakers and Headphones, and the Dual Headphones option, and none of them yield results.

And how would I know if it's a router issue?

Try by-passing the router.  Your ISP could also be blocking those ports.  Some have taken to blocking a range of ports used by P2P software, which happens to include a range of our VOX ports.

I am limited to the wireless internet provided by my dorm, so I have no way of bypassing the router. I just have to accept not having VOX then?

If you are on a wireless router that has more than one user connecting to it, chances are it does not properly support UDP over NAT and that is the problem.  Not many residential grade routers support that protocol.

So basically suck it up and learn to live without VOX?

Pretty much.  It is not something we can fix.  Most colleges also block asynchronous connections back into the network, for security reasons, and this could also be why it is not working.
