on the highways, i drive around 75mph. doesn't matter the speed limit out on 295......55 or 65, i do 75. at that speed, i'm perfectly safe. 25 years ago, when driving at that speed, i was passing 95% of the cars out there. now, i'd say about 75% of them are passing me. they're the ones that're gonna get nailed.

I  drove I-95 to Fla a back a  few years ago and I noticed something amusing. Wherever the speed limit was 55. Everyone drive 70. And wherever the speed limits was above 70....Everyone drove 70.

Ya just gotta go with the flow of traffic and not do anything to stand out.

i've yet to see anyone...besides mom do 25 in a 25 zone, unless there's a cop behind them. if the cop's in front, then the cop is usually doing 35-40.

Heh, never said you had to do 25 Cap, just that you are likely to get pinged (again, in western NY) for doing 35 in a 25.  Just cause the cop is doing that speed doesn't mean he won't nail you for doing the same, either.  Seen that plenty of times.

yea, me too.

i was behind a voorhees cop in cherry hill a few weeks ago. he was way out of his territory. he was first in line in a lane that merged......i stayed on him till we cleared the rest of the traffic in the right lane, then dropped back. speed limit was 45. when i hit 75, he was still pulling away, and i backed off, for fear of getting nailed that far over.
 don'tcha know, there he is sitting at the next light? so it was obvious he wasn't on a call, otherwise he'd have hit the lights, and kept going.

 i had that on my dash cam, and was gonna post the video.....but i never got 'round to it.

Here in Missouri they are just starting to roll out the Red Light Cameras.. and I saw the first SPEED Camera over the weekend.

Although I am 100% AGAINST this sort of thing, all I can say is at least getting caught with a camera here is not considered a "moving violation" and no points are assigned.  If you actually take the time to go to court, they have to dismiss it, because they don't have a police witness.. and because it is impossible to verify the driver of the vehicle with the cameras 99% of the time.  They had to make it no points so people would just pay the fine and go on with their lives.

And this is coming from a person who has had two speeding tickets and one stop sign ticket in his 19 years of driving...

they've got red light cameras in glouster township, deptford, cherry hill, and stratford here in south jersey. glouster township says that in the six months since they've activated the first 4 cameras, $900k in tickets have been sent out. they're adding more.

 the trick they seem to do in nj, is to send the ticket out too late for you to be able to contest it. there seems to be a time limit on calling the court to fight it.......

oh yea.....the company that runs the cameras is arizona based.

The cameras are there to generate income. It is not about laws now.


If your vehicle is beat up with a bat and all the lights and windows are broken out. Even if there is blood at the scene. They won't do more than write info down... no finger prints, no ivestigation. Most police forces are just in the job of making money.

It is not the officers fault.... just your local governments fault.

Having been in the job I can tell you that the folks in cars really don't care much about writing a ticket, most consider it an inconvenience that they have to do. They'd rather be on a call and with the staffing low and the call load high that's where they spend a lot of time.

As far as the vandalism is concerned. What did you expect to happen? That they would send out "CSI" from hollywood to take pictures of your damage? Do you expect to have finger prints taken on the broken glass? What exactly are they supposed to do for you? If there are no witnesses, no pictures (ie. surveillance footage) with a recognizable face and or license number of the suspect vehicle, if any, what are they going to do for you? There can't be any prosecution without those things. You can photograph the damage just fine by yourself and give it to your insurance company. You certainly don't need to Police to do that for you. In short, if there is no chance of a prosecution there is no real reason for them to be there. You can get a report number by phone if you need it for insurance purposes.

Oh and doing a DNA test is not a cheap or convenient thing like they show on TV. It's only good if you have something to compare it to as there is no national data base of the DNA of everyone that is in the the USA. Sorry but "CSI" just doesn't do stuff right away since it's only fiction, like getting finger prints off of rocks. Real crime tech and evidence analysis is a long tedious affair that costs quite a bit of money. There is only so much available to spend in the budget.

You should also know that a simple fender bender, thanks to the state legislatures actions not the Police, is no longer a criminal situation. It's a "civil" situation and that makes it outside of the jurisdictional requirement for Police to respond without significant injuries or death which would make it criminal. Lot's of places no longer have Police respond to them and just tell you to exchange info. Thank the state legislature for that one.

As a father, I never speed in 25's.   Ever since I have had my driver's permit at age 16 (21 years ago), I don't speed in 25's.   On the freeways, I'll usually do 5 over.

Most don't like writing tickets. It is their local governemnts that require them to make an income. I base this on several friends who are LEOs.

No idea why you bring up a show on TV to defend your opinion. I do not watch cop TV shows.

As for excuses for not fighting crime. Thanks it backs everything I posted in the first post. Do not depend on the police to come to your aid. be prepared to protect yourself. If and officer has the time he may arrive before it is all over. Most LEOs are over worked and under paid. Most forces have a shortage of manpower.  Most work for a "Company" that does little to fight crime untill the little thieves grow up to commit deadlier crimes.

In the incident I was refering to, the officer said they were not allowed to take prints. This was in Pasadena Texas.

well....the cameras ARE there for income.

if they TRULY wanted to lower the rate of traffic lights that are run, then they'd simply need to make themselves more visible. take that "out of service" cruiser, and park it in a nearby parking lot. you'd be surprised at how well that works. especially if you leave the radar up and running in it.

 like i mentioned.......glouster township is bragging of nearly $900k in tickets issued in less than six months....and they also say that due to this, they're installing more cameras, and that they're here to stay. that sounds like revenue generating to me.
