New Mossy
« on: September 17, 2010, 12:23:05 AM »
Lets add the Mosquito FB mk XVIII Also known as the Tsetse Fly, Which had a Qf 6-Pounder (57mm) Anti tank gun  and 2 .303 Mg's. The 6-Pounder Carried 24 Rounds. This is not an aircraft that i would like now, but one that I would like for the Future. This Version of the Mossy would make a Good Anti-tank Aircraft.

The tse-tse mossie.

A scary proposition.

Good anti tank gun, correct.

As a fighter and/or bomber hunter, I cant imagine what harm would be done with these things. :O

Formation of lancs, tse-tse mossie, 3 shots, good lord, where did my bombers go.  :rofl

It wasn't used in the anti-tank role, it was used for anti-shipping as a sub killer.  The cannon was eventually removed because rockets were more effective and safer for the crew.

probably only 2 shots, I've taken out a whole formation with one shot with the B-25's Pumpkin launcher

Did I tell anyone? I lurv the new mossie XVI  :rock
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

The Tse Tse Mosquito was originally conceived as an anti tank platform. IIRC the RAF felt that German light AA was too deadly for it to be used that way in Europe though so they switched it to puncturing U Boats.

Unlike the B-25H it carried armour piercing rounds so it would do pretty well against tanks in the MA. A 57mm AP round to the top armour would probably knock out any tank we have. So I doubt we'd see this aircraft without some sort of hefty perk price attached to it.

Would it be that much more deadly than 4 nose mounted hispanos against bombers though?

I agree Greebo, likely a medium perk price because it could be used to snipe bombers at long range.

IIRC the MkXVIII is just a Mk VI with the 6 pounder in place of the hispanos,of course this required remodeling of the bombbay to make way for that massive gun.

I think AckAck hit it on the head though as they found the rockets to be more effective and more usefull so the MkXVIII was made in limited numbers.

I'd like to see this A/C added at some point,a duel between a MkXVIII and an Me 410 with the Bk5 sounds like alot of fun to me.

800-1000lbs more armor as well, to better protect the engines and crew from flak.

Much as I love the Mossie, I'm not sure the XVIII would prove to be much of a bomber-killer. Its engines are optimised for low-level stuff, and with the weight of the Molins, plus another 900-odd pounds of armour, I imagine it would have a devil of a time bringing the 57mm to bear.

I'm all for it in an anti-shipping role.

Now all we need is shipping.  :neener:
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Shipping, railway yards, special buildings (that can only be identified by recce planes beforehand)... All good mossie targets.

Have I told anyone, I really love this new Mossie XVI   :x  :x  :x
