37mm on the P-39
« on: September 17, 2010, 07:04:14 AM »
Has the 37mm cannon on the P-39 become ineffective?   I literally put 3 rounds into a spit 5 and nothing happened..   When I opened up with the 50s is when he finally came apart.  Seems that one 37mm round on a spit would tear it apart.  Anyone else notice this issue while flying the 39?

37mm on the P39 is not near the weapon that the 37mm on the Russian birds is.

However that being said, 3 rounds should have caused damage. But if you put them in 3 different places in some situations it might not be enough. Also how do you know you hit 3 times? Film?

A solid hit from a P-39s 37mm usually blows the target in 1/2 if its a fighter. The P-39s gun has a slow ROF. I would echo the previous poster you can't know for sure wether you really hit with 3 rnds or not. A connection with the 37mm you will see a very large explosive flash from what I have seen. If you didnt see that...you probably missed and actually scored hits with the 12.7mm's.

I have occasionally seen a spitfire shrug off a 37mm hit from my P-39D if I hit him right on the spine of the fuselage behind the cockpit, in my experience a 37mm to the wing will usually tear it clean off.

That being said the way the damage system works now the components are either 100% effective or 0%.  If you hit in different areas and did 99% damage in each area it would appear that nothing was happening at all when in truth they may be on the verge of failing should anything else hit them.

It's all guess work without film however.

Unfortunately I didn't film it, but I did have 3 hits one in the left wing, tail section, and fuselage.  I know they hit, because of the sprite I seen.  It wasn't the 50s because I was only shooting the cannon by itself.....  Like I said he came down easy once I did use the 50s.....Thank you all for the input, very much appreciated.   I will be sure to get film on the next one.

VSYNC = "off" can cause "rubber bullets" like this sometimes. It is recommended to always have VSYNC = ON unless you are testing (diagnostically) how many FPS you get under certain conditions.

Where do you see the VSYNCH????  I only get 20 FPS at best, if you equal fires, fuel leaks, and engine smoke, then i get a whopping 6-8 FPS.   Main issue is I am playing on a laptop.....LOL

I think the occasional statistical flucutation/fluke can happen to any armament.  I don't think anyone considers the 30 mm on the 109K-4 to be underpowered in any way, but I remember in The Final Battle scenario landing two hits of 30 mm cannon from a 109K-4 on a P-51 (when usually one hit is plenty enough to kill one), and it flew away.

A little later in the same fight, I hit a different P-51 with 2 shells, one in the left wing and one on the tail:

and that behaved as normal -- each location being completely blown apart by the single shell:

The Final Battle in March had a few P-51's in it to fight. :)

I have been playing both the D and the Q in mid war a lot lately.  The problem of the 37mm not causing damage is not really a problem I think.  When I have for sure seen the larger hit flash on both single and double engined planes it tends to be a sortie ending event for the victim.  Against 4 engined bombers not as much luck.  These tend to absorb more than I can land on any single target.

Doesn't that seem a little odd?  A 37mm cannon round not being able to take a wing off a B17,Lanc, or B24 with one shot?  The manned guns on the field are 37mm and it only takes one hit on these bombers to bring them down at 2k.  I would think the P39 would have the same effectivness with the same calibler weapon.  Of course, it could all depend on the rounds being fired.
