Izzard was a pilot in the Second World War and was shot down behind enemy lines, evading capture for 100 days.

He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.

Bob Izzard was 87.

Before starting his broadcasting career, he was a World War II pilot, and was shot down over Europe. He managed to escape capture for 100 days, and walked back to friendly forces. He flew over 150 missions over Europe, earning him a Distinguished Flying Cross, and Purple Heart, as well as many other military awards.

He was also a published author of 9 books.

Izzard was 87.
