New PC Graphics
« on: September 18, 2010, 07:37:29 AM »
Have a new laptop with windows-7 and having graphics issues (acer aspire 5734z)

All planes show as little squares until they come within  1.5k, then they display wings and detail.  All nightime stars display as small pixel squares. I did install the hi-res software from HT.

Video settings are

1024 768

1024
auto field view
anti aliasing -none - no access slider doesn't move

graphic detail  is set to default
1024 texture

The video card is
mobile intel(r) 4 series express chipset

The reason I have to use  1024-768 is that I use a 19inch external monitor and for full screen That is the only resolution that gives me the full display.
I have played with texture settings etc. but see no change in plane display.

Any suggestions ?

Laptops just aren't made for gaming. Your pushing your laptop too hard. Drop the texture size to 512 and try it again. You may have to drop it to 256.

thanks
have tried 128,256 and 512 with no change in the flying acft. detail.  I have used only laptops for AH, this is just newer/faster.  The graphics and game speed  are great other than the problem described though.

The only other thing you might do is to look for a newer driver for the video. The problem is the intel chipset is a weak video setup and really isn't made for 3D gaming.

My laptop runs AH fine except one thing, and that is if I alt tab out and go back in a bunch of stuff turns white for 10 sec or so while loading, but thats all.  Otherwise graphics and everything are fine.  And I am running it on normal settings and high res.

I'm pretty sure that happens on all computers. It has happened on every computer I have ever played AH with. Its just reloading the textures into the card.

While there are some great laptops out there now days that play games very well, anything that uses an intel GPU as its prime graphics option is going to be bad at games. Intel makes bare bones 3d graphics chips which are really only meant to run things like Aero in windows.

Thanks everyone, I will check for newer drivers.  Like I said, the hi-res graphics are awesome, only planes further than 1.5k are just square icons unless you zoom on them or wait till they are 1.5k or closer, then they display perfectly.

Ok well either way that is my point, my laptop was like 700 on sale, 1,000 off sale.  Has no problems running games on high resolution.

First off, like others are saying, your intel graphics are a BIG ISSUE... this is very subpar for gaming graphics.  There are other laptops out there with many different BETTER graphics chips, and even some have a port in which you can upgrade the graphics, but from looking at your specifications, it appears that is not the case with your system.

The best you can do is keep your drivers up to date, set textures to 256 MAXIMUM (keep in mind textures are different than resolution), and if performance still isn't satisfactory, you can try turning your resolution down to 800X600 (you should be able to set it to 'stretch' in the video adapter's configuration page from control panel).  Also make sure that all of the advanced graphics settings are unchecked from within aces high, except for bump-map terrain.

Like it or not, using a laptop to play AH is like sending a boy to do a man's job.
It "may" run the program, but run it as well as similar desktop it will never do.

Plus its not exactly easy to open up that laptop and put a new top of the line video card in it.
Which in a Desktop is really not hard to do at all.

Generally speaking its going to be short in the graphics and sound departments, as well as much more likely to suffer from heat issues.

I pull over 54-59 fps minimal on my laptop(and im wireless), no lag, and so forth.

I bet your laptop doesn't use an Intel Graphics Chip...

Brutally Ripped from another thread................

"my laptop fan platform under it,"
What was I just saying about heat issues?

Uhuh, and yes you can buy a laptop with a decent chip in it that will run AH.
But if you took that same amount the laptop costs you could build 3 desktops with it.

Yes it can be done, no it is not going to be as efficient or cost effective as a desktop.
