October FSO: Sicilian Stranglehold
« on: September 18, 2010, 05:52:47 PM »
May 12th. 1943.

Afrika Korps is destroyed. The surrender of all Italian and German forces had began 3 days earlier in Tunisia. 130,000 German and 120,000 Italians are taken prisoner along with German general Von Arnim and 25 other Axis generals. The war in North Africa was over after three years of bitter fighting in the desert from Algeria to Egypt.

After months of consideration, It was finally decided that in order for the Invasion of Sicily to proceed, the island of Pantelleria must be captured. Shortly before the surrender in North Africa, Allied aircraft had already started attacking the small fortified island and by May the offensive was fully underway.

On June 11th the Allies landed to find that the Axis stronghold was ready to surrender. Now Pantelleria was the newest base of operations against Sicily. One month later the Allies would be landing in Southern Sicily and the captured airfield on Pantelleria after repair would play an important role. Another important role would be played by the 99th Fighter Group in their combat debut, It would be the start of the Tuskegee Airmen's prestigious combat history.

This FSO will depict the Air battles fought over Sicily, Malta and the Mediterranean after the capture of Pantelleria and in preparation for the Allied Invasion of Sicily.

You will be able to update your squad info until Thursday Sept 23rd.

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Looks like a fun one but I am wondering why the rest of RN's Fleet Air Arm present during Operation Husky is missing.  The F4F-4s are obviously the two squadrons from the HMS Formidable (no. 853 & 893, iirc) but none of the three seafire squadrons from the HMS Indomitable (no. 807, 880, 899) are represented in the Allied OOB, not to mention the squadrons on HMS Formidible maxed at 10 a/c each I do believe.  Which means Allies might be over by four F4F-4s and under by thirty Seafires in the OOB; I think the third squadron on the HMS Formidable comprised 8 TBMs, but I doubt that the Allied side will miss those.  Information on FAA action during Operation Husky is pretty sparse and I am going solely from memory of conversations I have had over the years of playing miniature & board wargames.

Really not trying to put a pointy object in anyone's eye(s), just showing what a WWII naval-tard I am in real life.

Thanks for the input.

Maybe I misunderstand you, but the Seafire is represented in the plane set.

I think he was looking at the min/max chart on the writeup. Shows no Seafires, although I believe according to vinKrimms post, it probably should have a max number and the F4F-4's should have a lower maximum.

I did mis-read it regarding the Seafire sir, sorry about that.  I see it is listed.

Yes, the lack of numbers for min/max on the Seafire did indeed attribute to my error.  The other 99% is my own ineptness.  Also, I am saying that fewer F4F-4s might be in order, along with possible adding some TBMs, just for variety.
