WWI Planes
« on: September 21, 2010, 03:26:22 AM »
Let's start a poll to see what would be the most popular choice for the next WWI fighter to be added. Everyone says we need bombers and zeppelins but let's face it, this is a Dogfighting arena, lets keep it that way. I'll give some choices and yes I am leaving some out for we must keep in mind that the planes we add have to be able to compete with the F1 Camel, F2B, DRI and D VII.

Sopwith Pup
Nieuport 17
Nieuport 24
Albatros DVa
Albatros DIII
S.E. 5a
Sopwith Triplane
Spad XIII

I think these would be the best fit for the WWI arena as far as performance. I could name ten more planes but they would either outclass or be outclassed.

My choice is Albatros DVa

SE5a gets my vote.  The albatross was a looker too.  Surely there should be a German two seater to match the Brisfit?

It seems you intend we vote for one, so logic dictates an Allied a/c (Jasta jocks already have 2 superb rides). In which case I'd opt for the SE5a

Albatros DVa is my personal favourite.

But looking at the planeset, the choise becomes quite obvious IMO.

We don't have a single French fighter and SPAD XIII was the most produced fighter of the war. So IMO, the Spad XIII is the obvious choise for the next fighter. Hopefully there will be more than one though.

perdweeb,

I think Nieuport 28 would be the best choise for Nieuport for your list considering the late war theme of the WWI arena.

I'd have to go with the S.E.5a for this one.  That or the Nieuport 17.  That should prove fun.  :aok

No. This is a fighter jock topic. If you don't like it...

ww1 bombers  blackburn R.T.1 Kangargoo british aircaft

See sentence above.

I was thinking that the Nieuport 28 would actually be a spot better than the rides we have now. That is why I didn't include it. the nieuport 17 would be alittle outclassed and the 24 would be about equal IMO, but you are right the 28 would add to the late war theme and it would be a beast.

for fighters, i say spad13 is a priority. along with the albatross.

but, if bombers are added, i think ww1 arenas would see alot more players

It would see alot more players, yes, but not the players the people in the ww1 arena currently want to see. The ww1 arena, in addition to being about fun and skill, is virtually free from all those base taking, hording squads that myself and a few others get so sick of seeing. Yeah we do wanna see more players and as a matter a fact perd posted a thread about how we're gonna get people together in it again. However, I think a lot of people would agree we dont wanna see the players I'm talking about and adding bombers would just lead up to that nonsense. I change my response to a spad XIII

Actually the 28 wasn't anything particularly special and was considered inferior in relation to the Spad XIII and was actually rejected by the French Air Service and became the first fighter of the American Expeditionary Force because, at the time, there weren't enough Spads. Both Spad XIII and SE5a in your list are among the top 5 fighters of the war while the Nieuport 28 isn't.

Sopwith Dolphin gets my vote.

However, I think a SPAD XIII would be appropriate as well, we should have a French aircraft in the WW1 arena.

My choice would be the Spad XIII or SE5a. Either one can be used as a BnZ a/c with the ability to extend.
That would add more variety for rides in the WWI arena. The speed would get some pilots out of the uber
Dr1 for a change.

Also, the Lewis gun (Foster mount) in the SE5a could point upward at a 45 degree angle to shoot at F2b's from below or
tilted down to shoot in tandem with the forward firing Vicker.
