9800GT 512mb VS GTX460 768mb

In looking at this comparison there seems to be a lot of advantage to "upgrading" my PNY9800 to the GTX460.  The smaller (192bit vs 256bit) interface has me concerned that it might defeat all the other advantages.

Two things:

1.   If you have a 32 bit OS, the increased Video Card memory COULD (not will) work against you.
2.   Get this one instead:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130566  It's more, but the warranty is a Lifetime Warranty.   You cannot beat their warranties.

Regardless of the 192bit memory interface, the GTX460 will run circles around the 9800GT.  The only way this might not be true is if you were using it for memory extensive 3D applications (like AutoCad), but then again if that were the case neither card would really be sufficient.  The faster, new generation GPU in the GTX460 is like comparing a Ferrari to a Mustang.  OK.. so the mustang can fit more passengers... doesn't make it faster though.

Masher, the GTX460 he posted does come with a lifetime warranty.

The GTX 460 is superior to the 9800GT.   The 9800GT has 112 Stream Processors and the GTX 460 has 336.   Also the RAM is DDR5 on the Fermi and slower than the 9800GT's DDR3.

Also, I'd ignore the Sparkle (never heard of the Company) and go with the reputable EVGA.   The EVGA I recommended is also 1GB of memory and is 256-bit.

I've never even heard of "Sparkle" until today.   My point is EVGA will more than likely, be around a lot longer than Sparkle.

True, EVGA has a good reputation, but it is also a HUGE leap in price... almost $80 more!  That's almost half of the price of the card itself.

And MY point is that you claimed originally that it did not come with a lifetime warranty, "It's more [EVGA], but the warranty is a Lifetime Warranty."  This implies that the card he is looking at does NOT come with a lifetime warranty, which tells me you either didn't bother to take the time to actually read his link, saw "sparkle" and automatically dismissed it's integrity, or are just too arrogant to care.  I was just pointing out that you may have missed that.

And now that you're trying to cover up your mistake, "My point is EVGA will more than likely, be around a lot longer than Sparkle" rather than just admit that you were wrong and apologizing tells me it's most likely a combination of all three.

I'll agree with you.  If the price was even CLOSE to the same (within 10%.. or maybe even 20%) then I personally would probably choose the EVGA over the Sparkle any day of the week, but when we're talking a difference in price of almost 50%... well I'm sorry but it would be hard to justify that much of a price difference.  Not all of us are made of money and not all of us are as good as you.

See... THAT card I would probably choose over the Sparkle card linked to by the original poster, but if I had to choose between the Sparkle card originally linked to, and the eVGA card Maserbrum linked to, then I would probably choose the Sparkle... there's just too much of a price difference.

Sparkle has in the past made a number of low-quality gadgets and doohickeys revolving around some things video... They had a USB unit that would let you take footage off of VCRs, for example (in a limited-interface kind of way).

I would no sooner trust them than I would a trust a Logitech joystick.

That said, the fact that they ARE a non-entity in the video market and they ARE selling at 80 below normal selling price makes me wonder exactly what corners they cut on quality to reduce the price so low.

Run away. Do not look back. Find a better brand. Let Sparkle prove themselves in the video card market more before you buy from them.

But Krusty's reply supports my posts.   If you're dropping "X amount of dollars" towards a new video card, make sure it is a QUALITY manufacturer and one that offers a Lifetime Warranty (but won't be closing it's doors in the future).   Certain brands can be found where this shouldn't be an issue.

Take the Sparkle card that was linked, there isn't even any feedback on it.   When you look at Newegg, you look for feedback in the hundreds and even Customer Award Winners as a start.   Is this the litmus test?   No, but it gives you an opportunity to find out "Are the reliable?", "Does anyone have a similar setup?", etc.

^--- One reason I like browsing NewEgg is the reviews. Not all are useful, and you have to take them all with a grain of salt and understand maybe there's other problems causing certain problems (poor power supply or whatever), but in hundreds of reviews on a single product you can get a feel for what your average user experience might be.

That's why I went with the 1 TB HD I chose, because it was the only one on NewEgg at the time without a massive amount of DOA reports. (Hint: It's a Samsung that some others poopoo, but has given me excellent performance so far!)

When I bought my pny 270 I already had good experience with my 9800's so as a loyal customer I went with the PNY 270. 1 thing I learned is if you have a good product, great customer service and decent prices then I will continue to stay with the company.

The best part of the PNY customer service is when you call them you can actually understand them and they are courteous and very helpful.
