So what style do you prefer when flying 109?
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:08:22 PM »
Hartmann style  :airplane:

- stalk-and-ambush tactics
- hold fire until extremely close
- If it's dangerous to dogfight further,  break off and be content with one victory

Marseille style  :joystick:

- prefers high-angle deflection shooting attack and shooting at the target's front from the side
- attacked under conditions many considered unfavorable (diving into enemy formations and risking damage for example), but make an approach fast enough to escape the return fire
- would commit to dogfight to the point of lowering throttle and flaps

how about this....

1) Find the largest dar bar
2) yell yyaaarrr! on 200
3) go 'balls out' in the hornets nest
4) create a conga line of spit 16s trying to kill you as you hang in there by the skin on your cartoon teeth
5) die with hopefully a few kills
6) repeat, occasionally taking breaks for more beer

Yeah, that's right, you just got your rear handed to you by a fuggly puppet!

I use both, to an extent.

The slow rate of fire of the german cannons plus the poor roll rate of 109s, especially as speed increases, tends to limit my infrequent enthusiasm for 109s to one or two sorties a tour.  And when I do fly em its because I like the skins :)

Hartmann here.

Roll rate at high speed n slow firing rate don't make much difference in K4 when your faster then a tempest, zoom better then a P38, roll in the vertical at low speed and one 30mm hit explodes just about anything.

For me it depends which arena i go to.

Main arena - Hartmann
Dueling arena - Marseille, I stay only around 5-6,000 feet.

I like the vertical fight in the 109s. The 109s can regain speed and energy pretty fast.  I like the 109-G2 and the 109-F4 the best. While some other 109 models are faster and have a better gun package. The 109-G2 can turn pretty well and climes very good and even the Spit16 will stall out behind a 109 in a vertical fight with the G2s after a few BnZ climes. The 9 minutes of wep in the 109s don't hurt ether. Harman had it right about firing at close range. I find that firing the cannon only gets a kill better. I take the 150 rds of 20mm gun package and fire up most the 7.92X57 before I fight. A half a tank of fuel and a drop tank you can lose helps to stay lighter once you engage a Target. Stay fast and high. Read Agent360s posts in the HTC forums about flying the 109. His post covers the 109-k4 mostly but it was a big help to me.

On a more serious note, I suggest the g14 or the k4. Fighting with a tater chucking bird will rearrange how you look at air combat. The 109s have an amazing rate of climb and with some throttle work can lift their nose up and climb even when slow, something most other birds can't do as well.  Furthermore, although it doesn't roll or turn like a spit16, you can 'out turn it' in two ways....

1) it makes a fairly extreme 'egg' shape when turned in the vertical. If you get it sub 100 mph at the top you can turn in a very short amount of space, and use the engine to roll it.

2) Out turning is not so much about 'exact' out turning but rather about creating a difference in e states. I can 'out turn' you if I can slow my plane down much faster than you and get to my corner speed before you can. Spits retain e much better.

Yeah, that's right, you just got your rear handed to you by a fuggly puppet!
