« on: June 15, 2000, 12:40:00 PM »
ok, dillemma....

i have an ABIT BH6 mb, and i'm upgrading to a PIII 600...but which one? E or EB

currently have 256megs of 66mhz ram (i think 66mhz)...and will change it to 100 soon if i need to.

What should i take into account when i purchase a new chip for this mb?? Will either one work??

First thing is ya wanna get new RAM,  the P3's are 100Mhz FSB chips and that RAM is not gonna hack it.  Go with PC100 or preferably PC133 RAM.You want to  get the Slot1 600E. unless you want to spend another $25 for a sloket and an extra 30-40$ for a 370 version.  Good luck, the BH6 is a good MB  make sure you have the latest bios installed to make it work with the faster processors

E means 100MHz FSB, EB means 133 MHz FSB. Your BH will probably support 133MHz FSB  (your AGP slot in particular will be operating way out of spec at that speed)., whereas the E runs at a speed that is in spec for your BX-chipset motherboard.

If you're willing to overclock, there's just no contest. The E will hit 800MHz (at 133FSB) almost every time. Your motherboard won't be able to overclock an EB very far before the AGP or PCI slots are so far out of spec that the components stop working.

All in all, if it's a straight choice, get an E.

Thanks Bombjack! I went looking at Priceline and a few other places and was wondering what the E or EB stood for.
It's been over a year since I kept up with what to upgrade to and things have changed ALOT.

YOU WANT THE EB!!!!!!

E has 256 cache
EB has 512 Cache...
EB is 133 bus
let me tell ya it's a world of difference just in the extra cache
i picked up an Asus mother board AND 600EB for about 345.00  the board also supports the 133 bus and ATA/66 ( 80 pin ribbon, for the faster RPM and transfer HD's)

I did ask alot of questions before buying and asked every computer guy i knew what would they Rather have  a 700 Mhz with 256 cache or a 600 with 512, and EVERY ONE said hands down the 600 with 512. combined with the 133 bus there is NOWAY you'll want or NEED to over clock this chip, and it's reliable and Very very stable.

All Coppermine CPUs (leaving out the Celemines for the purposes of this discussion) have 256Kb of on-die cache running at full clock.

I think you may be confusing the E/EB distinction with that between Coppermine and Katmai (the old .25 micron cores) which had 512Kb of cache off-die running at half clock. The higher speed in the Coppermine cache more than makes up for the reduced size.

UPDATE

just in case you wanted to know how things turned out and if i can offer anyadvice for those who are looking at a similar set up as mine:

purchased PIII600E from mcglen.com for $197.00 U.S. (was an OEM piece, so you'll need a fan/heatsink)

purchased fan/heatsink from local dealer. $20.00

256 megs of RAM is 100mhz FSB (actually found serial number and looked up the code on Hyundai.com, i was unsure what i had initially)

Installed fan and cpu, no probs.

PRACTICALLY DOUBLED FRAME RATES.

using voodoo3 2000.

haven't tried overclocking yet, but will soon!!!

thanks for all of your help and advice.
