AH locks up...
« on: June 24, 2000, 12:48:00 AM »
Im slowly putting together a new system....right now I have a 500 mhz celeron with 32 megs of Ram, integrated vid and sound(this is real bad i know) and DirectX 7a. Im running AH at 640 x 480. When I get into the cockpit, as soon as the engine starts the game freezes. I cant even alt f4 out of it when this happens. Since my cash flow is VERY LIMITED , should I buy a new vid card or get more RAM?

Also any suggestions on a vid card would be appreciated. IM looking for somethink like the All in Wonder....something that will let me hook up my cable TV.  Thanks
Tibbets

Tibbets,

Actually because it locks as soon as you start your engine, it sounds to me like a sound problem.

Just for grins, try moving the sounds folder in Aces High somewhere, anywhere just as long as it's not in the Aces High directory.  This should stop the program from playing any sounds, but it may tell you if sound is causing your lock ups.

If you removed the sound folder and it still locked up (be it somewhat later down the runway) you still might have a sound problem, but that aside, getting a vid card for a machine that has on board goods, more than likely is using "dynamic" memory allocation, ie. it starts with a base 4mb ram (sometime a video cache) then as the graphics requirements increase it takes more of the system ram, to a max of 32mb. Since you only have 32mb, and most likely 28mb after initial vid allocation. you can see that you will run out of free memory mighty quickly! We(my company) won't sell any systems with less than 64mb if they have onboard vid.

Also, if you have O/B vid, you lose the AGP port, therefore limiting you to getting a 3d only PCI card. voodoo2 is about it in that line, and I wound'nt bother there.

I'd start with getting another 32mb(minimum) ram. And go from there....

I am assuming that you have the latest drivers for everything here of course!
