If you removed the sound folder and it still locked up (be it somewhat later down the runway) you still might have a sound problem, but that aside, getting a vid card for a machine that has on board goods, more than likely is using "dynamic" memory allocation, ie. it starts with a base 4mb ram (sometime a video cache) then as the graphics requirements increase it takes more of the system ram, to a max of 32mb. Since you only have 32mb, and most likely 28mb after initial vid allocation. you can see that you will run out of free memory mighty quickly! We(my company) won't sell any systems with less than 64mb if they have onboard vid.
Also, if you have O/B vid, you lose the AGP port, therefore limiting you to getting a 3d only PCI card. voodoo2 is about it in that line, and I wound'nt bother there.
I'd start with getting another 32mb(minimum) ram. And go from there....
I am assuming that you have the latest drivers for everything here of course!
