A-20 Rockets?
« on: October 07, 2010, 07:01:13 PM »
Does anyone know of the usage of T30 triple launcher rockets on the A-20 Havocs? I cant seem to find anything on them other than a picture of some strapped under the wing. Did they see much use, or were they something only a specific group did with their Havocs.

Thanks

Tested with the 5th AF but they didn't pursue it if memory serves.  Not at home right now, but will double check when I get there.

I think that would be pretty cool to have in the game though.

A20 is due for a remodel anyways, I'm sure HTC will look it up when they do. IRL A20s had a ventral turret

From Steve Birdsell's wonderful book on the 5th AF "Flying Buccaneers"

"At Hollandia in July 1944 there were experiments using the A-20 as a rocket carrying plane, but the launching tubes reduced cruising speed by fifteen miles and out and the cut in range was too great a sacrifice"

"All found the rockets unsatisfactory; "Jock Henebry (3rd Attack Group C0) says it was 'a real aerodynamic abortion and a one shot deal' that was soon abandoned."

Not if they never used them operationally.

Cobia, the quad 20mm in the G model  were only in the first 250 or so produced. There were issues with the 20mms and they were dropped in favor of the 50cals. All Quad 20mm A-20's (excluding the nightfighter P-70 Nighthawk)  were given to the Soviets via Lend Lease. The rockets weren't used because of the drag caused by the tubes still be mounted to the wings. I do believe they add the option of having the ferry fuel tank in place of belly bombs.  :salute TC

yes they did. of the 2850 A20G's produced, most went to the Soviets under the Lend Lease. the G model was the most numerous version of the A-20 produced.

Cannon armed A-20's saw combat in the South Pacific with US squadrons. Yes they were not favored, due to the 20mm's performance in real life, but that hasn't stopped other aircraft in AH being highly used.

That's the bird used for testing the rocket set up by Henebry and a couple others.  I'd imagine thats the picture the OP saw too.
