« on: October 11, 2010, 08:14:36 PM »
was used in north africa around 1943-1945 had the ability to do carrier launches, pretty interesting thought to bring back an old bird to more use in the game

You do know that the P-40 was not a carrier capable plane, correct?  Just because they were ferried to the operational theater on a carrier and launched does not make it a carrier capable plane.  For that the plane would also have to be capable of landing back on the carrier, which the Kittyhawk was not.

What would happen in sorties like these is that the plane would be delivered to the operational area on a carrier and then flown off to either to their new base or conduct a mission and then fly off to their new base.  The P-40s would not return to the carrier and land on it.  P-47s were used in a similiar fashion on occasion in the PTO.

You should stop using pop-up books to get information about airplanes.

Not that i am taking sides with Ack-ack.  But could you have read something that they did took off a carrier on a mission then landed at a land base?

I know it sounds ridiculous but perhaps it was a "Doolitle raid" style by conserving fuel do to distance to and back of the mission.

No "perhaps" about it...

Think about it folks... These short range planes showing up all across the world... most of them got there via transport, jeep carrier or some other flat-top like ship that wasn't intended for combat purposes.

They did not take off with bombs on, and they didn't fly combat missions directly from the carriers.

It was a simple ferry stage.

And they were Merlin engined P40 F and Ls of the 33rd, 57th and 325th FGs that were ferried to North Africa and then launched from the carriers, but not into combat, just to their land base.  Same for Many of the Malta Spit Vb and Vc, and Jugs in the PTO to Saipan

P-40F was arguably the best

Oh no! Its a P-51VLR! Actually, in keeping with naval tradition, the aircraft had to have the name 'Cat' in it, but the closes they could come to merging Mustang and Cat ended up Muskrat, cause the guy who came up the with idea had a speech impediment.
