vid card question?????

I was thinking of splurging and gettin a Geoforce GTX 460 from EVGA.  I was wondering how long would it take this card to blow out a 300watt power supply in a off the shelf, Emachine 4310?

Pretty quick, if it would even power up. The minimum listed on the EVGA page is a 450 watt PSU. If you upgrade to this, you would definitely have to invest in a new PSU as well.

If you have an emachine chances are your CPU isn't really fast enough to handle the card (meaning you wouldn't get much performance out of it).

What kind of system do you have currently?

My 300w couldn't power the 9400gt right.

yes a 9400GT could run a on a 300watt .. but the GT240 is a better  low wattage card thats 2 1/2 more powerful and will run on a 300 watt PSU. i just recently  ditched my 9400 to upgrade to a GT240 and the GT240 put the 9400 to shame.  also maybe looking at the ATI HD4670 too. its suppost to be a 60ish  watt card. 

the GT240 is faster in lower resolutions but in higher resolutions the HD4670 does better.

the 5670 or 5570 is also some more choices they to also run around 60ish watts

Skip the 4670. You won't hardly get any boost over a GT240. It's a waste of money because they're about par with each other (i.e. you spend the money get nothing in return).

I just recently upgraded from 9800's being sli'd to a single PNY 470 GTX and the difference is quite noticable. Between using less power and running cooler, and the graphics quality is awesome too.
The only con I have had so far.. 425 brand new. OUCH...

Please note the distinction... the Radeon HD 4670 is about par with the Nvidia GeForce GT240.

I wasn't talking about the high-end GeForce GTX470, I was talking about the budget card from Radeon.

Not only are you likely to fry the PSU but quite possibly the card and/or motherboard as well.

Thanks guys, for all the responses. I ended up finding out that my 9800 GT was fine and that I actually blew out the PCIe slot.  Would have been po'ed if I had bought a new graphics card and same problem.  Thank god for the local PC shop.  Ended up buying a new motherboard w/ CPU for $125    I like the new setup, just thumpin myself for saving my settings, sound, squad folders, but not my skins

You probably blew out the PCIe slot because you don't have enough power to even run a 9800.  You'll probably blow out another one on the new board.
