wont even boot..
« on: October 13, 2000, 08:38:00 PM »
im working on a system for my brother to use so i got the AMD k6-2 500 on a FIC MB combo i bought from TC computors.

well i installed all the old components from the system i was gonna junk. but cant get it to go beyond the POST screen.

the screen that tells me the type of bios, the type and speed of the CPU, the amount of mem, what HDs and CDrom i have, then the next screen is blank save for the flashing cursor (  -  ) at the top left of the screen. it wont even boot from the floppy.

iv used different HDs i have, even some w/o OS installed on them. iv changed the ribbon cables from the MB to the drives. im not useing modem or sound card yet, so thats not a prob.

none of the jumpers on the MB are out of place or missing...

any thots??

You propably need to go to bios and set it up correctly. After you put power on hit (usually) Del-key. Do you have any manuals of that mobo ?

At first Bios looks quite messy but it's quite easy to handle. Maybe this link could help.
 http://www.rojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/BIOS_Guide/BIOS_Guide_Index.htm

here's link to FIC's manuals: ftp://ftp.fica.com/manuals/motherboards/

and here are the jumpers: http://www.fica.com/techsupport/jumper/jumper.stm

Good luck

Try going into the bios and clearing the ESCD. (Extended system configuration data)  If you move things around a lot, sometimes this causes problems.  Also check to make sure your primary boot device is set to your floppy drive.

Long shots, but at least it's something.

My main rig does the exact same thing. I'm on a backup system now.

It goes through everything you mention and then stops with the cursor flashing. Normally it would be searching for my scsi devices at this point but, it just hangs. And it won't access "A" drive either, can't get past the scsi search.

I need a new bios chip. How do I know? Cause I was hacking it right before it did this.

Ph33R M3, i'M a l33t hAcKEr.   Hey, won't me to work on yours??

iv got the manual. thats how i confirmed the correct setting of all the jumpers.

in desperation i used both 'bios and 'setup' CMOS settings, but no luck.

the bios is set to look on the C drive for OS and then the A drive. iv changed that back n forth.

the only real stumper is the setting 'boot from LAN' setting. when i disable this, choose, 'save settings and exit' the KB locks up after i select 'yes' as my answer...

the date on the bios as indicated by the view at the bottom of the screen during its POST is 6/2000.
