WW1
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:27:07 PM »
Was my first night night back in AH that I could fly in about a month and it looks like WW1 popularity may be growing.  Not sure what spurred some more people to try it, whether it was the AvA set-up, threads, or tired of EW/MW/LW, but it was it was great!  We had about 15-20 people (up from when I left of 5-8) and the fights lasted several hours.  It never got into idiots starting a "you ramming tard" or "you alt or Dr1 dweeb" or anything and it was just good fights with some great people.  Saw some names I have come to know after 7 months of WW1, and several names I've never seen in there but in LW (which is impressive considering my lack of LW play and memory).  Was some intense fights with every plane type (even if it is only 4), some close calls with Dr1s, D7s, F1s and the occasional F2 that upped to try and down mine.  The Dr1 pilots were especially fun to fight since they didn't instantly go into a tight turn like most use to do.
Hopefully the popularity doesn't just spike a tiny bit for a week then die back down since it was pure fun in there tonight. I know it's not everyone's thing, but if you haven't tried it, or it's been a while, I think you should try again one night we have another group like that in there.

<S> Papadog, MajQBall, Happy, iwlf, joedog, Wildsau (know that's spelled wrong), and to everyone else who was in there tonight.

Hey 1701E haven't seen you in a while, still flying the F2b like a pro? Only seen it handled that well by one other - Xcelsior; both flying it like a single seater, as it should be flown  :salute

You are correct in suggesting the Dr1 schweinhund are at least throwing some ACM these days... bad news for the rest of us, it only means they're getting more confident. Hopefully the numbers continue to build, limited though the game is in there (at the moment) it's brutal, visceral and has raw dogfighting appeal while maintaining that 'Gentleman's War' illusion - not so much with the combat but certainly with the friendly cameraderie amongst the players.

1701e and Xcelsior are 2 people? I think I'm gonna need therapy after that, never knew I had split personality. Been off for a bit due to internet troubles and not wanting to annoy people with excessive warping. Still flying the F2 and keeping people on their toes though.  :)

Even if the dr1s are getting confident it means they'll make moves that could end up badly. A lot of them kept stalling lastnight due to it. Was just nice to see some ACM out of them and all the other planes.

last week we had a WW1 setup in the AVA and it was pretty intense. we were averaging about 16-18 players almost every night. maybe that started something! i hope it keeps going.

judging by the attendance, and fun i saw in the ava last week, i think it would be safe to say that the rise in numbers in ww1 is a direct result of that particular plane set.

Apologies for not reading your signature info, although I did see you flying in there as 1701E some time ago, so while I'm obviously abit slow I'm not insane.

And now the nightmares will stop - I'm cruising alone at 4k in the Camel, two dots approach.... F2b's! It's Excelsior and 1701E..... I can't outrun them! I can't even outfight one of them! Hastily I remove my right glove and scrabble around under my flying jacket for my cigarette lighter.... shielding it from the raging gale in the cockpit I coax a flame to life, tearing desperately at the canvas under the coaming with a bloodied hand. It burns! They are almost on me!! I pull the case off the lighter and splash the volatile fluid onto the flames.... the fire takes hold and black acrid smoke billows from the cockpit. Pulling hard on the stick I kick right rudder and the Camel hurls itself into a viscious spin as the heat from the flames whips across the unprotected skin under my goggles.

Perhaps now they will leave me alone.

Was particularly good to see folks move around to keep the odds close last night.  Mini fur balls are great fun...beats the polite 1 vs. 1 fights...though those sure beat 1 vs. none.

Suspect the wwi planes in the A vs. A created a little interest...that was a good change of pace for all of us.

Hope to see everyone up there...and Tusk...throw the lighter in the back seat of X's plane...not yours!!!  You could start drinking sterno...forget the blindness, that takes awhile.  Gives you a potential weapon of last resort!

F2B is a great flyer...except some of us cant hit anything but air with that single gun.  Marvel at X and numeral I do.

I played there for a few months.  Enjoyed it a LOT.  But alas, the shine wore off a wee bit.  I am hopeful they grow it into something a bit more in depth, and at a bare minimum, add some more great rides to keep folks interested.

I'm for any sort of improvements in there, but I think I know why it works so well even as it stands.... remember how when you were a kid, and you had some really great friends? Not so easy to get friends like that as an adult, we tend to get more judgemental. But as kids it didn't matter so much what we did, or what we had to do it with; some old cardboard boxes, a back yard, a ball, some tin cans maybe. You could recreate WW1 with a few bits of rubbish so long as you had your mates, it was the company that made the difference.

Well I've got MY piece of old rubbish (the AH Sopwith F.1 Camel) who wants to play?

(sorry HiTech I just can't seem to help myself)  :rofl

we have moved onto cheesymite scrolls Mano. Vegemite sandwiches are for the great unwashed down in the trenches. We also drink Tooheys around these parts, I'm not sure what type of mead tusk gets down in Adelaide.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.
