Fallout: New Vegas
« on: October 18, 2010, 04:47:16 PM »
Screw MoH, CoD and get Fallout: New Vegas.

Been playing the Hell out of it over the weekend and it's great.  I'm really liking the hardcore mode, gives it more of that old Fallout feel and a little bit of a challenge.  Can't load up on weapons and ammo and leave the food and water behind and the moral choices seem to have more 'grey' area than Fallout 3, again more in line with the original and sequal.

Lots of good improvements over Fallout 3, like being able to repair equipment based on type instead of exact match.  If I find a Merc Adventurer's armor and have a Merc Grunt armor piece, I can use the Grunt armor to repair the Adventurer's armor.  You can also add mods to weapons and reload your own bullets if you have the necessary skill points.  Crafting is much easier too but they make it look more complex than it is, it's basically if you have the skill and ingredients you can craft it.

Combat is easier but still has that kind of marionette puppet character animation from Fallout 3 but not as bad.  Shooting is easier and seems more "accurate" than in Fallout 3 and V.A.T still rules unchallenged though you don't have to rely on it for every shoot out like in Fallout 3.  At least in the earlier levels (I'm only level 8) I find myself firing in 1st person view than using V.A.T to queue up my shots.

Haven't gotten a companion yet but from what I've seen in the manual you have far greater control over your companion than the last game.  Now I won't be so afraid of letting my companion use the mini-nuke launcher without fear of him trying to use it in close combat situations like that damn zombie from Fallout 3.

Still has the 1st/3rd Person view and like Fallout 3, 3rd person view sucks for combat but good for exploring while 1st person is good for combat and sucks for exploring.  So I guess in that regards, same as Fallout 3.

I do wish they had used a new engine for the game but I can understand why they had to use the Gamebryo engine and they did update it quite a bit and it can be seen in improved graphics over Fallout 3.  The radio is a let down, it seems there are only 4 songs in the Nevada wastelands and Wayne Newton sounds like he's talking with a mouth full off bourbon and Xanax, sometimes its hard to understand what he's saying because of his slurring.  Maybe as the map opens up some I'll find more radio stations with a better playlist.

I'm still in the early parts of the game, doing more exploring than anything else right now.  Have found some pretty cool stuff so far and some other things that I don't want to come back to until I'm at a much higher level.  *Hint* don't be low level when caught at the Hidden Valley bunkers after dusk.  So far it's a great game, a big improvement over Fallout 3 thought it does have some weak areas like I mentioned and there are a couple of annoying issues like clipping though doors and having some mobs fall through the geometry but those can be fixed with patches hopefully soon.

For once we agree.

Fallout 3 almost destroyed my life and education, it was so addictive and fun to play it was beyond belief. Graphics were cool, atmosphere spot on, sick humour was hilarious and on top of all that the endless features could keep you busy for DAYS, let alone hours.

New Vegas looks to be the same but considerably better, unfortunately I have to wait two more days in Australia to get it.

Anyone have it for Xbox? My PC is on the fritz, and won't be up to snub anytime in the near future and I am really stoked to get this game. I just hope it isn't ruined by Xbox as so many other of my favorite games have been.

Of the three platforms, the PC is obviously the best to get it for but I've heard that the Xbox 360 version is slightly better than the PS3 version, the lighting and shadowing is done better and far less jagged edges though both have about the same draw distance.

There's this little mom and pop video game store in Venice that has been there for years and the meaning of "street date" is lost on them.  I dropped in on Saturday to pick up Dead Rising 2 (great gory zombie killing fun), the owner asked if I wanted to pick up Fallout then but for the PS3 or wait until Tuesday to pick up the PC version.  I think this thread pretty much shows what my decision was.  :aok
