something tells me catapults back then would just slowly nudge an f-14 off the deck

the fleet air arm used the same steam catapults  that would later launch f4 phantoms . they could have power adjusted as necessary  for aircraft weights.

I have the movie on DVD. The director said they had to fly the Tomcats at near stall speed to fly along side the Zero's. Also, those are not Zero's. They painted some other type of plane to look like Zero's. They also enhanced Kirk Douglas' chin to give him that square jawed look.

How is it that this was never talked about in the first place.  Did they have them in the ETO?
