Microsoft FFB2 losing "Y" Axis
« on: October 24, 2010, 09:02:55 PM »
Every hour or two my MS FFB2 stick loses all resistance in the "Y" axis. It does not matter if I'm manuevering, shooting etc. I've lost it in many different situations. Just now, I was flying along level, enjoying the scenery and flop; all resistance lost on the Y, yet the "X" axis still has it.

Anyone know how to fix this? I've reloaded the software, but that didn't fix it.

Appreciate any input.

It might be overheating... try putting a fan on it (for testing purposes) and see if it still happens.

Regardless, I think you'll find to be an issue with the stick itself, not with windows or the software...

some people have just been checking and un-checking the force feedback option in game.

Doesn't really explain why only one axis will lose it though

I occasionally lose both axes. I usually get it back if I end the fight and re-up. How do you get it back?

The only way I can get it working again is to exit the game and go into properties of the joystick. After messing with the force feedback settings and overwriting the files it will work correctly in AH.

Do you have the orginal software installed ie the disc that came with the joystick?

Uninstall it and let windows detect it.  Don't install it on anything later than xp. I had issues with the stick unplugging in vista when i moved from win2k. Happened in il2 and aces high. Btw the software on the disc is 8 years old and there are no updates. For a game like ah were u can configure everthing in game its pointless installing it.

I did uninstall the software for the stick. Unfortunately, under map controllers - select controller; the joystick was no longer shown and I did not see an option to install it???

I'm running windows 7 here, I plugged the stick in and looked for the driver and it says none are required, although it lists the stick as what it is.
Just says its a HID compliant games controller in details?  :headscratch:

I used XP briefly but can't remember if I had to install the disc or not?  :headscratch: definately used it with win2k. It should work ok as thats the OS it was designed for?

More than likely.... the pot is shot.
if you have tried to recalibrate the stick, and it drifts off that is an indicator that a potentiometer may have gone south on you.

Had a cyborg stick with the same issue, electro contact cleaner may help but i doubt it.

No ground I don't think it's a POT issue.  He's losing FF, not the axis itself.

A lot of these FF sticks will shut down a motor if it gets too hot, and it's possible for one motor to get shut down but not the other.  Once you quit using it and go play with settings it has had time to cool off and start working again.

I can't really find a correlation between a system issue and losing FF on just one axis, so that leads me to think that something is wrong with the stick itself... either a loose connection or a failing motor (either of which can cause it to get hot.. or even simple just stop working for a bit).

I have a feeling it's a bug. Today I lost my Y axis FF again, instead of bailing and re-upping as I usually do I carried on fighting. The stall buffet function still worked and I'm pretty sure it was working on the Y axis motor too. That would rule out overheating or faulty pots. Can anyone else reproduce this? The next time it happens try to see if the buffet function is still working.
