New Mobo/CPU big problems
« on: October 31, 2001, 04:58:00 AM »
Just got an Asus P4T-E w/P4 1.7ghz, 2x128mg Samsung RAM(bus).  Installed everything (5 freekin times) and never could get to the Bios Boot, monitor just sat there with the "No Signal Recieved/Cable Possibly Disconnected" message.  Guyz I tried everything...re-did it at least 5 times and followed all the instructions to a tee (have built many computers..first P4).  RIMMS/CRIMMS all correct and seated to manual specs, cpu/heatsink seated right, ATX main and 12v power plugged in correctly, even tried 2 vid cards..Rad8500 and GeForce, both of which still work on current system so I know they are ok..the whole 9 yards.  Only thing I get is the onboard power led and the fans spin up.  Tried it once with the Drives all plugged in and they even get power (you know, spin, make noise on powerup)(HDD Led works) but NOTHING to the monitor.  I'm fairly certain the BIOS is jacked up or the board is altogether bad, but if anyone has any suggestions...please pass me a CLUE!!

P.S.  It is supposed to be JumperFree...I didn't set it to Jumper Mode to try setting the Freq/Mult using Dipswitches...should I?

Hiya,
Not knowing the mobo......
I get a similar message when my vidcard aint sat right
You can always try reseating it
Other than that only other thing i can suggest if all components are 100% is double check all motherboard leads for poles (wrong way round, + going to - etc)

Hope ya sort it

Have Fun

Hiya,
Try this also as last resort

Clear the bios chip via mobo manual or remove the battery for a minute (does same thing) if you get bios boot screen go in and use the setup default option and boot to windose
To clear my bios i have to short 2 solder contacts (power off btw)

Maybe worth a shot

Have Fun

Try with only the cpu, video card and one stick of the ram installed on that board.

If no go, try other video card.

If still no go, try other stick of ram/or diff slot, etc.

Swap monitors if you can.

Swap P/S if you can.

Other than that, it sounds like RMA time...    :(

I had this happen to me with my last system (Epox mobo)

Try running the motherboard with just ram and vid card OUTSIDE the case, you'll have to put the case nearby obviously to connect the power.

Did you install the thingamajigs into the unused RAM slots?  It's required for RDRAM.

Render,

I was thinking the same thing.   With RDram you have to use Endblocks or Blanks ( can't remember what they are called) in the unused Ram slots.

only guess I have other then  did you plug the extra two connectors into the p4 mobo?

we had the same problem once...turned out to be an ESC key was stuck down on the keyboard.

you may unplug everything except video card! no mouse, no keyboard, no HD's, nuthin!

if it boots to bios, you've narrowed it down at least.

Got the bubble wrap the MB came in? Sit it on top of that.

Like they said above, Mb, ram, video, and see if it boots. If it does then on to next step.

Like they said, try the motherboard outside the case sittine on some static wrap, or bubble wrap.  What happens is that the MB can be touching the case in some innocuous way (to the visual eye), but it may be shorting out the whole system.

Only thing I can think of, short of having other components to swap in and out to test them. If its a bad part, it could be RAM, MB, or processor. But without identical parts to swap in and out, its just a guessing game.

What video card are you using?  I just discovered there may be VERY SERIOUS issues with i845 and i850 MBs if older AGP 2x video cards are used.  (Possible video card and motherboard damage.)  If you are using any GeForce or Radeon series card you are probably ok, but anything else may have problems.

What made you choose a P4 BTW?   :)

Edit:  I see you said GeForce and Radeon 8500.  Those should be ok, so I'd said defective MB and/or cpu.

Bloom nailed it! It has to do with the video card voltage. There is a warning on the Asus website that the voltage must be 1.5 I think it was or you will FRY the motherboard.

Good luck
