Butcher Pete (1949):

And its artist, Roy Brown (1925-1981):

Flappers (1920's):

I rest my case.

you realize he's singing about a butcher, right? possibly you may have noticed that there are actual instruments being played? and that the dude is actually singing? can you identify more than 2 of the instruments being played in that tune?

now i will counter that with this......
from 1944......
very simple uncomplicated music, as bing, and the andrews sisters had the talent to sound great on their own......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5OoiWGygq4&feature=related

from 1941......andrews sisters.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pfCFU3Mqww

bear in mind that the above links are from well before my time...i was born in 1962. so now lets jump forward a little......

1958 little anthony and the imperials..........listen to the music, and the pure talent....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqUG6YBgLAw&feature=related

into the 60's now...i have to lead it off with the doors, because i think they are my all time favorite band.....even morrison who i believe didn't view himself as a singer, but rather a poet.....listen to these guys. i know they were kinda screwed up, but they made great music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WW9T6mRkQA&feature=related

moody blues.........
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9muzyOd4Lh8

so far, although musical styles are different from the 40's to the 60's, you may note that to this point they are all actually singing, and playing musical instruments.

lets move into the 70's......dinner's almost ready, so this one is a quicky.....but notice once again, talent by all shown...different style, but no de-evolution.

i'll come back after i eat, and hit the 80's, 90's and 2000's........

I see it like this...

as drug tastes and preferences evolved, so did music :devil

for example:

dope musicians made fantasy, slow oriented music (mostly rock), then later disco

then a few decades later speed musicians (obviously speed consumers) sped up rock music with thrash metal...
at the same time well known rappers (some of them who are distributors of crack and coke to make a living) brought reality music to the mainstream.

i think you may be quite surprised to find that most of those heavy metal types are cleaner than you'd expect.......

oh yea..and i think that blondie originated rap.

All you can do is help the ones you can.  That will be much more effective than flushing our
future down the toilet because of what you notice instead of what actually is.  Older versus
younger has been going on since the caveman days.  Kids notice stuff, make sure the example
that is set is a positive one.

back to the subject at hand

EJ

Through this game I've 'met' a lot of young men from your generation that were mature, respectful, intelligent, and all around good people. Most of whom I had no idea they were young until they posted their age in the forums.  I know most of my sons friends and, while some of them have warts, I never have trouble getting them to pitch in when I'm doing a project around the house and they are here.  So your generation has an upside.

but the music yall like sucks ;)

Hip hop/rap has its roots in the 70's and 80's anyway.
While the commercialized genre is of course trash (just as all commercialized music is, there's really no point even looking at 'pop-rap'), rap/hip-hop is a natural progression of poetry, which has in its more traditional form been marginalized over the past decades.... rap 'music' is more or less a merging of pure poetry (i.e. no musical accompaniment) what can be more easily considered 'music', which most (who don't listen to rap at least) would say requires to have rhythm, melody and harmony (which not all rap lacks in the first place). It's not my forte but there's no point in ridiculing it, just take it for what it is...

Further, pop culture is always about pushing the cusp of what's acceptable...
It's only natural that what would have 20 years ago been considered risque would today be considered docile and non-threatening, and thus you need to go further to get the same kind of reaction. Even with that considered, I've been in places where the radio station has been changed because the Doors came on, even today (that is, because the music was inappropriate as there were children in the room).

That said, I hate most modern music.

Things change, that's the natural order of things. The same apocalyptic prophecies of the future based on youth culture hash themselves over again every decade.

People have been saying that society's going down the drains for the past couple thousand years.  I honestly find it very unlikely that is actually is today.

Big difference. The music today is horrible with very few hard to find exceptions, the "Peace Love and Dope" generation had amazing music. And I'm the age that all the new music is aimed towards. (Turning 19 on the 4th).

Whether or not you like music is completely subjective.  No piece of music is actually 'bad' (or good, for that matter).
Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?
Apparently I'm in the 20th FG 'Loco Busters', or so the legend goes.

Wrong, with a hint of interpretation, you can see that he is either referring to a serial killer, rapist (or both) and using the euphenism of 'butcher' to avoid the censorship of the time.

A'Capella music has always been around

However, I must agree that all of those musicians show great talent.  No argument there.

I personally do not dabble much in rap, as most times I cannot identify the words being rapped.  On the other hand, when I can, I see that although sometimes it is drivel (which has been published every generation, and don't give me any bullpucky), but on the other hand, it can and does portray the suffering undergone by those living in poor, urban societies.

Do not fear rap or hip-hop because they are new, and still occaisonally experimental music styles.  Let the artists have a chance at taking you away into another world, just as those of the 60's, 70's, and 80's did.  Rap is poetry read forcefully at its root, just as songs are poetry sung.

All music styles deserve to be appreciated, and truly do have their place in life (even Justin Bieber's, although I'd pound his brain out given the chance, for if you need to pacify large numbers of little girls, nothing beats it).  Thrash metal is for when you lift weights, soft rock for slow dancing, and Jazz for tossing back a smile to the old days.

Learn to love it, just like you've learned to love many other styles (Classical is great for when you are going fast, nothing focuses my concentration like a concerto).

this is very true. it is also why i refuse to quit from CAP. it would make it a thousand times easier for me to run my business if i didn't keep my responsibilities within cap, but there are BUNCHES of great, hard working kids in cap.

in the 2008 air show at mcguire afb, we had nearly 2,000 cap members. most of them were cadets. those cadets worked their tulips off during that show.
all of us senior members did whatever we had to do so these kids could still get to enjoy part of the show.

most of us haven't given up.......

I was in CAP for awhile, but the closest one to me is a 45 mile drive and it got to be a bit of a chore. (especially in Austin traffic.)

I'm surprised this thread went anywhere.

For those of you that have given up on this generation's music, I'd mostly have to agree. Pop makes me want to slam my head into my desk, for the most part. I haven't given up though, there are a few bands that few of we kids have kept sacred.

Like Agalloch, for instance. The style is unique, hard to explain, kinda metal-ish but with a sense of peace. Their lyrics truly put pop to shame, being both clean and having great implicit meaning in every one of their songs.

I'm fond of 'Not Unlike The Waves'.
