WWII in HD The Air War
« on: November 01, 2010, 04:39:51 PM »
WWII in HD The Air War   Airs on Nov 10th. The next in the WWII in HD series

I sure hope the History channel does this some justice.

WWII IN HD: THE AIR WAR presents the untold story of the American 8th Air Force’s bloody battle to defeat the German Luftwaffe in the months leading up to D-Day. Told through the gripping, first person accounts of three American airmen and Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney, The Air War showcases breathtaking aerial combat – original, color footage, never before seen by most Americans – of the B-17s “Flying Fortresses”, P-47 “Thunderbolts” and P-51 “Mustangs” on missions such as Regensburg, Schweinfurt and Berlin. Never-before-seen 8mm footage of the airmen on the bases, the devastation in Germany, and the Luftwaffe perspective is also highlighted.

Flying 25,000 feet above the earth in oxygen-devoid air, and temperatures as low as 50 below zero, the 8th Air Force fought a war unlike anything ever before experienced. By the end, they would suffer more than 26,000 combat deaths – more than the US Marines lost in all of World War II.

This two-hour special is narrated by Emmy nominated actor, Rob Lowe. Characters are voiced by: Casey Affleck (as B-17 bombardier Joe Armanini); Sean Astin (as P-47 fighter pilot Steve Pisanos); Chris O’Donnell (as B-17 pilot John Gibbons); Elijah Wood (as Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney)

To create this series, HISTORY launched an exhaustive worldwide search for color footage. As a result, WWII IN HD: THE AIR WAR draws upon footage unearthed from archives and private collections across the globe. HISTORY preserved and restored this footage ― some of which has not been seen since the 1940s ― and converted it to HD for unprecedented clarity. An exceptional Dolby “soundscape” enhances the striking visuals and brings them to life as never before.

Bet Steve Pisanos would be disappointed to hear it's untold, since he wrote is biography already :)  4th FG pilot flying Jugs and 51s.  His book is "The Flying Greek"

Nice website if you want to buy the book :)

Thanks for the link for the book Dan. I just finished reading Whirlwind by Barrett Tillman. Its a real good book if anyone is looking for something to read. I purchased the book on CD ( and hardcover )so I could listen to it while driving, and have listened to it 2 or 3 times now. If ya like Barrett Tillman the book wont disappoint. Its all about bomber / naval actions against the Home islands of Japan.

Look forward to it even if a bit cynical about 'unseen footage' or the 'untold story'. They said that about the other series but I saw a lot of it before. As for the Eight Air Force if they think it's untold I could have loaned them some of my books.

As for HD well over here they showed on the standard History channel rather than the HD channel. Which rather defeats the purpose.

But it sounds interesting.

thanks for that.  I've been doing some wondering if any of these great books are available on audio as I listen to books all day at work.

Whirlwind was under $25.00 and worth every penny. I know most CD books are expensive, this was was a bargin. I got it on Amazon.

Im now moving on to The Tin Can Sailors, but trying to find a copy thats inexpensive is tough.

...presents the untold story of the American 8th Air Force...

Wait. What?

With the attention it gets you wouldn't think there was anything OTHER than the US 8th Air Force during WWII...
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
