so at the risk of being laughed at, im going to admit that i do fly with the stall limiter on...

However, having only been on AH for a little over 6 months I am now considering turning it off.

Firsly, I notice that general flight is a lot more demanding and it forces you to fly a little more gently, (my usual ham-fisted attempts to throw the plane around, now quickly result in me going into a spin/stall etc).

So my question is, how much of an effect it will have on a planes performance? (obviously different effects in different rides...but just generally please...)

I assume it allows you to fly closer to the edge of the flight envelope at the risk that if you do not know where that edge is you will end up spinning/stalling...

I also assume it gives an obvious advantage? So what is the best way for me to exploit this new found advantage?

I guess flying more and understanding the limits of the plane would be a good start, but is there anything anyone has noticed in particular where having the limiter off has shown particular advantages? Certain turns, maneouvres, etc, etc...

Cheers

I'm not sure if you recall but I was messing around in the DA with you and threeup a few months ago, Threeup had stall limiter on at 15k in a spit 16, I had it off in an I-16. At 15k trying to stay with the spit had me flopping around and falling out of the sky. On the deck I had his number well and truly. Turned stall limiter on at 15k in the I-16 and I had a much better time of it. What I'm trying to point out is that when you take your plane out of its comfort zone with the stall limiter off it will turn around and bite you if you dont look after it. The stall limiter is a real crutch when you are out of your performance envelope. happy to do it again if you want to play around with it, I'll check in tonight.
No thank you Turkish, I'm sweet enough.

Stall turns are good
Turn it off
It will take awhile to get to grips with
By the end of this tour you"ll be fine
It's like plugging in rudder pedals or trackerIR
Takes awhile to get used to but well worth the effort
Any way what's life with out a challenge
Enjoy

Nothing to laugh there.

When I was new, I decided to keep SL on after a few sorties. There was so much to learn (getting a feel for closure rates, judging energy, learning basic SA) that I was glad the limiter made keeping control of my bird a bit easier. At that point, the loss in performance was not as important in comparison to loss of control.
Only after 2-3 months I felt confident enough to start concentrating on the finer points of dogfighting and switched it off. I have to say that I was mostly BnZ / E fighting (= hit & run) in a LA7 so that the lesser performance in tight turns was not that cruical to me.

Stall limiter is great for high alt stuff - bigger circles. We were high (with alt!!!) and the XVI doesn't like stripping E because of tight turns so it's on. Two things wrong with that. You can't predict your alt unless you're in an artificial or alt limited arena (like the 15K part of the DA). And the second is I'm a Spit Dweeb so my opinion is probably forfeit.

yeah i gotta say you can even pull off flatspins in spitfires even without stall limiter on let alone off. but without it on ive seen a few major advantages for the spit in tight situations. When i took SL off for the first time and took up my zero, i flatspined into the ground :lol after a few flights of doing circles over the base, i felt confident enough to go into battle. Im not going to lie this was only in february of this year approx. since then ive had it off for every flight. My P51 feels great without it on. it seems nice and stable to me (could just me being used to it). But in the end, take stall limiter off. its a hinderance in many fights and only good for learning planes.
