"Crossing the Saar -- Twice" -- An Excellent Interview
« on: November 13, 2010, 08:49:22 AM »
I heard this on NPR the other night, and it was fascinating to listen to.  Corky, Soulyss, and I talked about it on vox, but I wanted to share it with everybody else.

Crossing the Saar -- Twice
Lieutenant Carl Baumgaertner fought in the Second World War along the Saar River in Germany. Like many veterans, he tucked his war memories in a footlocker and never spoke of them. Fifty years later, a series of email exchanges with his son Jim sparked a detailed conversation. Carl’s grandson John has a part in the story as well. He had a chance to go with his dad to the spot in Germany where his grandfather fought so many years before.

The most terrifying words in the English language are: "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
