Read this if you are having problems with GF 3 cards

There seems to be quite a few people in the past couple days posting about issues with GeForce 3 video cards.

I've attempted to compile what I've discovered recently here.  Hopefully something here will help a few of you:

1 - Windows XP users - there is a bug in Windows XP that results in lockups in 3d games.  There is currently no fix available (as of 12/9/2001).  I posted about this a few days ago.  The bug affects all video cards and does not depend on motherboard chipset. (IE Intel, VIA, Sis, ALi, AMD, etc)
If you do get an actual blue screen while playing a game this may be your problem.  I'd expect a patch from Microsoft within the next couple weeks on this.

2.  VIA chipset users should go into their bios and set the AGP aperature size to 128 MB.  This is a reported fix for poor performance issues with GF 3 cards on all VIA chipset based motherboards.  In addition it wouldn't be a bad idea to update your AGP driver if you are having lockups.  (The AgP driver is available in the drivers section at www.viahardware.com.)

3.  Nvidia's 21 and 23 series drivers themselves have some issues.  My personal recommendations would be that Windows 98, ME and 2000 users should stick to the 12.41 drivers.  (GF 2 users might want to also try the 7.78 drivers.)  If you really must try to get that miniscule performance boost I've found that the 21.83 drivers are a little bit more stable than the 21.81 driver.  I have not personally tried the new 23.11 driver, but I've heard of some annoying problems with them.

Good Luck guys!   :)

23.11 solid as a rock so far and as for performance boost I wouldn't call 5000 -> 5900 3Dmarks 2001 jump miniscule :) (from 21.81 shipped with my Hercules Ti500 to 23.11) YMMV of course...
