AH in wide-format (new toy, don't read if jealous easily ;-)
« on: January 27, 2001, 02:00:00 AM »
Just picked up a SGI TFT flat-panel that does 1600x1024 (HDTV format) and what a blast. I run AH in 1280x1024 and the display stretches it flawlessly. I cannot explain it but the perception of peripheral vision is nicer and of course the sharpness and saturation is just awesome. I don't speculate I can get hitech to hack the 1600x1024 sgi support into AH, although once I get to buying a Ultra that has DVI-I interface, I'll try SGI drivers and see whether I can fool AH into seeing it. Got to wait for the price of the Ultras to drop a tad though. BTW, the flatpanel is reasonably priced compared to the competition and the quality is superb, works like a charm with analog SVGA in windows and linux.

Pfft, thats great, but if you want to be real jelous...

My dad just picked up a 60 inch HDTV by Pioneer. It has an RGB connector on the back...I was playing Aces High the other night at 1280x1024 using a Geforce 2 in 32 bit color in my living room. There is no greater sensation of flight other than actually flying. I'll take some pictures soon and post it. You really have to see it to believe it.

Have you tried using notepad to edit the video.cfg file in the AH directory to read 1600x1024?

I run at 1152x864 even though in video set up the option isn't available.

Wobble, ours cost us $7000.

GURNHERZ, yep, its the Elite series. I want to pick up a SB Live Pro so that I can hook it up to our system connected to the TV. Two 500 watt Cerwin Vegas for right and left channel, Klipse 300 watt center channel, JBL 400 watt subwoofer and two Bose rear channels...Aces High would be the pinnacle of all simulators on our tv and sound system. Progressive dvd is awesome too, need to get one.

I have looked at the new TVs and have wondered if a puter could be hooked to one.  I just don't understand the difference between HDTV and the "digital tele".  I see that digital tele is cheaper then HDTV but the image is much better on the HDTV.  I asked the sales "kid" in the TV area of Best Buy and he seemed unable to answer my questions about these new TVs    Basicly he said to wait for TV stations to broadcast for HDTV before buying a new TV.  He seemed to think that prices would come down.

If one wanted to buy to use as a monitor mostly, what would one look for????

I have this picture of myself sitting in an E-Z chair playn AH looking at a 60" screen

Welp, the biggest difference is the quality. HDTV's carry a resolution of I believe 1280x1200 or something similar. The HDTVs are widescreen (16:9) as opposed to normal (4:3). The DTVs sport a max resolution of 720x568 (something around there) and I've seen a few that are 800x600. The difference will be in the definition of the picture. An HDTV will cost more but in the long run it'll look better and you'll get more for the dollar. By 2007 everyone will have to have a DTV or HDTV to watch television unless you buy a pricey set-top box (they run around $2000-2500). What all this mumbo-jumbo basically means is that the HDTV will look a lot better than the DTV. The DTV will be digital like the HDTV and support HDTV signals however. I think most DTVs already have an HDTV decoder in them already, but some might not and you may need to fork over an extra couple grand in a few years (keep this in mind and ask about it, it could cost you to overlook it).

My recommendation: go all out HDTV on this one. In my opinion it's going to give you the most bang for the buck. And once you see an HDTV movie on HBO HD you will _NEVER_ go back...NEVER! The quality is practically real.

Now, as for using them as a monitor. I've yet to see a DTV with an RGB connector on it. All the HDTVs have them though. Make sure you ask before you pay though. (Thats always a good idea.  )

That's all...and I think I'm going to get myself a job at Best Buy. I would be a valuable asset...and I need gas money. (Getting my car next week!  )

Thanks Frosty, ya you should get a job there you know more then that kid did

I guess I will wait for the price to go down some before I take the plunge.  Besides, with a lower price maybe a bigger HDTV will be in my future.(anyone know a good site for second mortgages?  heheee)

tried 1600x1024 but AH balked and has shown the resolution box when starting with the standard DirectX resolution choices. I assume that the card can't either do the resolution (although SGI has couple of people htat support 1600x1024 over GTS chip and they have also a generic driver for that [but I don't have GTS with DVI-I {yet}]) or more probably ,the driver and DirectX stuff with it are confused. Ah well, no big deal, will get to it after I pick up a GTS. It's already a blast [although since the display stretches horizontally right now my gunnery went to hell based on changed geometry for the eye]
