Trivia #3
« on: November 17, 2010, 02:21:19 PM »
Name the plane that holds the record from standing cold start time to climb to target and back to base but was rejected by the U.S.A.F. in favor of the F-16. I actually had a chance to see and touch this plane in 1983 cold weather testing on Adak Alaska.

The only reason I knew that was I worked on the F-16 program at Generous Dynamics in the 80's and early 90's.  Not trusting my memory that much I double checked myself on several sites prior to posting the answer.

Interesting read.

And yes there will always be a soft spot in what passes for my 'heart' for the F-16.

I even got a couple of flights in simulators while I was there. Some things never change.  I could take off okay back then but getting back to land was a bit of a stretch. :D

You are correct sir about the prototype.  YF-17 was the prototype for the F-18.  The USAF went with the 16, while the Navy went with the 17 for the twin engines.
F-20 wasn't in that race though.

It was the YF17, which was also the predecesor to the Navy's F-18.  If I recall it was a joint design competition by the Air Force and Navy (and maybe Marines also), in teh end the AF chose the F-16, and the Navy (and Marines) the YF-17 with required modifications - aka the first generation F-18 (folding wings, reinforced landing gear, different midair refueling equipment and basic avionics equipment/support from the AF standards, and the arrestor hook off the top of my head).

That was an interesting read Dicho, thanks.

I worked on the F-18 for a little better than 10 years, although we dubbed it the CF18. It is still a great aircraft, and I miss it every day.

I did not know that the YF17 was capable of mach without afterburning. very cool.

cheers,

Pipz got it right the F-20 tigershark 10 times better than the f-16 less expensive to maintain faster and more economic on fuel. Airforce made a very bad call on this plane. I believe in the long run we would have made billions on the foreign market with this plane.
