Not true.  IRL ack was totally worthless and no one ever worried about the pretty, black puffs and red and orange blobs flying past themand their aircraft.

Everyone flew wherever they liked and the only people shot down were shot down by other aircraft.

This B-24 received just "one ping in the middle of the wing" from beyond 5k+.  I wonder if the pilot and crew were thinking "This just doesn't seem right" at the time.

Watch the German wartime film posted.  Watch a 1:30 where the 38 is going down missing most of the wing outboard of the left engine from flak.  20mm or 37mm.  Nothing funny about it as someone is really dying.  The flak was real.  You can see a Jug take a hit too earlier in the film.  Sometimes the golden BB gets you.

If anything we should have more flak, not less.  Besides, some of the flak was radar controlled... can you imagine the whines with that?

Look at some of the pacific based film sometime, they literally filled the sky with lead, particularly during the periods the kamikaze made their presence known.
