please update my bird
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:54:11 PM »
i think the FM-2 (and the F4F, for that matter) is worthy of a much-needed update. specifically the cockpit. here are the two best images i could find of the inside of the plane:

performance wise, there are a couple of things. one, the FM-2 did have the capability to carry 2x 250 pound bombs.

second, the current performance model has the Wildcat maxing out at 325 mph at just over 16k. what i have found is that irc it maxed out at 332mph at alts of 28k. not much of a speed difference, but the altitude at which the plane starts to lose speed in-game is almost 12k lower than what it actually was.

thats what im trying to find out. i want to say they were used for CAS, but Wildcats rarely flew CAS missions, as the corsair was the workhorse at the time

Love to see it.

Oh, and we need a separate F4F-3, as well, the four-gun package for the F4F-4 is not a valid substitute at all, and is more accurately an FM-1. There's far more performance differences between the -4 and -3 than just the number of guns:

F4F-3 climbed better, had longer range, and I believe was somewhat faster. She's also lighter (no wing folding mechanism and only four guns) which ought to help maneuverability.

Additionally most of the Wildcats on Guadalcanal were the F4F-3, as the -3 was given over to the Marines when the -4s began appearing on the carriers. The only -4s at the Canal were the Navy squadrons.

+1 for this wish. There are a number of aircraft in game that need a graphical update, including the F4F and FM2.

Couple more pics:

F4F-3. Note the extra frame on the windscreen.

Another -3, with the straight pitot tube and extra frame on the windscreen clearly visible.

F4F-4. Different windscreen and pitot tube.
