Ugh, need help.
« on: January 30, 2001, 01:44:00 AM »
All along I've thought it was either a bad joystick or a bad joystick port. Now I am not so sure.

I've been getting huge spikes, especially when pulling and to the right. Changed pots in the joystick and now I have a gamecard as well.

Did an interesting experiment; borrowed a gamepad to see what happened - and when I go to hoystick properties page to calibrate it jitters around the center, jumping to the sides up etc, just around the center.

Similar problems when I use JCenter, a joystick utility from CH Products. I get great low values with the gamecard, but it "jumps" from the center. Even more so when I am using win drivers.

It's almost like  something is feeding something current in some odd way.

I am at a total loss. No idea what to do. Am actually thinking seriously of using a sledge hammer on the computer and do without til I can raise some money.

My setup is:

ASUS CUV4X motherboard
Cii 566
129mb 133mhz ram
ASUS geforce v6600, 32mb sdr ram
directx8
WinME
CH Gamecard 3
and of course both a joypad and a ch fighterstick.

If anyone has as any ideas, I'd really appreciate it. If not, it seems like I'll have to cancel my AH account for a yar or so til i can afford a new computer. :/

I'm sure you've tried it but still - is "poll with interrupts enabled" unchecked? It used to cause lots of problems with spiking for me a few years ago...

Yep.

The thing is I have a digital joypad - you know, either fully in one direction or no movement at all.

And the cursor in the calibration rpogrmam jitters around like crazy.

This is not supposed ot happen. What can be wrong?

Update:

Tried with a MS PPRO joystick, plugged to gamecard. jitters when using gamepad or ch figherstick drivers, but rock steady when using MS PPRO.

Of course, it uses msgame.vxd

Other sticks use msanalog.vxd.

The joystick(s) USED to work, then all of the sudden they stopped :/

DX8? Did they work under DX7A??  Maybe try and remove your gameport in device manager, reboot and re-ad? Are you using CHJoy98 (the Win98 drivers?)? Wish I knew the cure  .

My CH stick's been a bit spikey/jumpy too ever since I upgraded to an Abit BH-6 with PPIII 600. I get "lurches" when turning and I can see in the AH graph the spikes when they happend. And poll with interupts is off.  I set my Gamecard value to 19, maybe I need to go higher...

Did you disable the other game port in your system when you installed the CH game card?  Also (I don't have too much experience with the CH Card), can you adjust the polling speed of the card?  If you can, I'd play around with that too.

What did you install before it stopped working ?

how does it work on a CLEAN System (Win98/DX8/Drivers/AH only installed after a FDISK)?
Did you try your Gameport / Joystick on another System ?
Did you shave your armpits this morning ?

SSanta< I'm using an ASus Mobo, ASUS Gforce 32 megger

CHpro stick, chpro throttle and CH peddals all going to the game port. I HAD the spikes your talking about! I fixed it doing this, FIRST clean them pods better!!!!!! even after cleaning the pods it still spiked but not nearly as bad, check the pods once more that grease they use gets all over the contacts.  In windows setup you have to keep trying and finally you will get a good calibration, ( took me over 30 trys) But it finally worked, after i recleaned the pods. That jcenter proggy stinks I stayed away from them DOS drivers CH sends.

StSanta, you didn't mention what drivers you were using. I had the same problem with my old CH Combatstick. Stay away from the Jcenter utility. Try CHJoy98.exe.Do a clean install of these drivers. They should be revision 2 when you view them in DXDiag. They cleaned up my jstick a lot. Worth a try anyway.

Nuttz, I've tried three sets of pots, two sets being totally new. No luck :/

And the windows joystick configuration program, in it when I select any joystick, even when I have a gamepad installed, the cursor jitters around in the centre. A lot.

Am at a total loss; tried replacing ram, disconnecting drives, removing all cards but the graphics card and game card....

No luck :/

Am not using the dos utility, but rather the win one from ch, just to check what kind of values I get on my game card. major improvement; with sopundcard I had 350 or so, with this one it's down to 70.

grizz, thanks for the file, unfortunately I got the Fighterstick, not the COmbatstick :/

Actually StSanta, IIRC these drivers were/are beta drivers written for win98 when people were experiencing anomolies with their sticks like you mention. They are for all CH joysticks...not just Combatstick.

Oops....just re-read a previous post...you're using WinME.      Sorry..not sure they'll make a difference then.

Really hope you figure it out...I know by experience it can be frustrating..to say the least.

(Edit: added IIRC    If someone knows otherwise...please let me know, but I'm quite sure they were for all ch products.)

Santa, this may be a stupid thing, but I got some spikes in the joystick, and solved it on an easy way.

Close ALL the non-important things running on the background. In my case was the realplayer, I close it and everything solved.
