DX8.0a vs DX8.1

...just remember you cannot UNINSTALL DX...you must RE-Install Win98 to get it back to an earlier version.

BS... just use the system file checker utility in Win98 to revert back to the DX version the OS shipped with, 5.1 in original Win98 and 7.0 in Win98 SE.  ;)

Don't listen to Microsloth, their technical support is......lacking.

Yes,

You can edit the registry and sys files to revert back to the older DX files...but that is not technically uninstalling.

You can also do all kinds of neat stuff with windows by hacking the registry and system files...but you can also screw up a bunch of stuff if you don't know what you are doing.

Open the start menu, accessories, system tools, system information, choose tools from the drop down menu and run system file checker.

In the advanced tab configure it to look for changed or deleted files and then run it, when you see a changed version of DirectX use the restore original file option and when complete reboot for an exact copy  of the originally installed DX or system files.

The Win98 tools allow you to fix almost any Windoze problem imaginable, but only if you know how to use them.   ;)

Every system I build or set up for a customer is easily returned to an as delivered status, it's saves me a ton of time and headaches and is EASY money.

Weazle...that still doesnt completely uninstall DX.

Look, we can go back and forth on this one all day...sure you can image a disk prior to a DX install and then reformat to an original image...thats what I do whenever I build a system for someone...it insures I can take the system back to the way it was prior to them screwing with it.

But DX cannot be uninstalled in the convential way.  It becomes part of the OS...a very deep part of the OS.  If you dont believe me do a DX install, go through the motions of uninstaling it, then run nortons registry program or one of the like and you will find all sorts of problems with the registry.

I have been coding with and using DX for a long time now...and I can assure you...the avg user is going to do more harm then good trying to go forward and back with DX.

Cheers!
