DX8.0a vs DX8.1

Do you recommend DX8.1 for a W98/GF3/K7/X36 system over DX8.0a?

Yup,

Course the real issue is will all your devices be compatitble?  DX8.1 has alot of support for older as well as many of the newer devices.  I recommend updating all your drivers prior to install...just remember you cannot UNINSTALL DX...you must RE-Install Win98 to get it back to an earlier version.

Lastly, are you running win98SE???

Total lock ups with some games dissapeared totally  :)
Haven't dared to touch DX 8.1 after that  ;)

I'm Using DX8.0a and get frequent system lockups.  No particular pattern to them just every couple of sorties the screen locks solid.  Im running W2K pro.  Would you guys recommend I upgrade to 8.1?

I've known it from day 1 when DX 8.1 got official.

Fishu its not very smart to judge the performance of a software by running the beta. You should know that.

Your actions are not logical.

I downloaded and installed DX8.1. While in some cases Dx8.1 gives you boost of 25% more fps than 8.0a, overal performance is similar than with 8.0a.

My system:
K7 700 386 MB
GF3 Ti 500 (Leadtek latest drivers).
W98 (not SE).
SB64
X36 + CH pedals.

AH performance 1280x1024x32 no FSAA:
42 - 65 fps. Normal fps into a low furball are about 44. Similar numbers at 1024x768 and FSAA x 2.

One thing you can do is to switch off sound debugging from DX options.

I recall having the same problem with 8.0a and soundblaster live!

Q. How do I uninstall DirectX?

A. DirectX 8.1 is a system component and cannot be uninstalled. If there is a problem with the DirectX install, it can normally be resolved by shutting down all running applications and reinstalling. As mentioned previously, DirectX 8.1 is fully backward-compatible with titles written for previous versions of DirectX. If you are having other problems after installing DirectX 8.1, these can often be resolved by installing updated drivers for your display card, audio card, or input device.
